Knife and Chemical Assault at Japan Tyre Factory Injures 15 Workers

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A shocking attack at a tyre manufacturing site in central Japan resulted in 15 injuries on Friday, leading to an urgent emergency response and investigation. A 38-year-old suspect was detained at the scene on charges of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing workers and hurling a chemical substance thought to be bleach.

The incident took place at a facility owned by Yokohama Rubber Co. in Mishima city, located in Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo, which specializes in manufacturing tyres for trucks and buses.

Injuries Reported Among Workers

Fire department officials reported that eight individuals suffered stab injuries and were quickly transported to local hospitals, five of whom are in serious condition. An additional seven were hurt from exposure to the thrown chemical, and all affected workers are currently receiving treatment.

Emergency responders from the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department were among the first to arrive, securing the area and providing critical medical assistance before transferring the victims to various hospitals.

Suspect Detained After Attack

Authorities in Shizuoka confirmed the arrest of the suspect shortly after the violence started. He is under investigation for attempted murder. No motives have been revealed, nor confirmed if he was affiliated with the factory.

According to police, inquiries are ongoing as they gather details on the attack's circumstances and the suspect's background.

Reports Indicate Use of Knife and Protective Gear

Local media have reported concerning details, including that the attacker was equipped with a survival knife and possibly wore a gas mask during the assault. Forensic tests are underway to verify the nature of the chemical employed but initial indications point towards bleach.

Factory Secured and Investigation in Progress

The police secured the factory promptly to mitigate any further risk to employees. Evidence is being collected, surveillance footage reviewed, and witness statements taken to thoroughly understand the incident.

Officials reported no additional injuries occurred after apprehending the suspect and temporarily suspended operations while safety assessments were performed.

Company Response Awaited

Yokohama Rubber Co. has acknowledged the incident but has yet to provide a detailed public response. The company is anticipated to cooperate with authorities while extending support to impacted workers and their families.

Concerns on Workplace Safety Heightened

This incident has escalated ongoing concerns in Japan regarding workplace safety and emergency protocols, particularly following prior events involving chemical hazards and mass injuries. Officials reassured the public that no further threats exist but emphasized the importance of increased vigilance among businesses.

Further updates will be shared by police as the investigation progresses.
