Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has spoken in support of the recent decisions made by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, which replaced Rohit Sharma with Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain. The selectors are looking ahead to the 2027 ICC World Cup, aiming to build a younger leadership core for the team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also drew attention for its unclear stance on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s roles in the 2027 World Cup, even though both are part of the ODI squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.
Kohli and Rohit’s Future Under Review
Ashwin explained that the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir made their decisions after assessing whether the senior players would still be part of India’s long-term plans. He said the main question before the committee was whether Rohit and Kohli could sustain their form and fitness until the 2027 World Cup while primarily playing just one format. According to Ashwin, the decision was not about doubting their abilities, but rather about future planning and ensuring smooth leadership transition.
Rohit’s Leadership Acknowledged
The veteran spinner clarified that there was no doubt regarding Rohit Sharma’s leadership quality. Rohit had successfully led India to two major ICC titles — the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Ashwin praised his captaincy but said selectors must still consider the long-term vision. He explained that the question was not about Rohit’s skills but about whether he fits into the plans for 2027.
Call for Domestic Participation
Ashwin suggested that both Rohit and Virat should show their commitment by playing in domestic tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy or India A matches. He said participation in these events would help them regain rhythm and prove their readiness for the World Cup cycle. Playing domestic games, he added, would also demonstrate to the selectors that the senior players are serious about maintaining form and contributing to the team’s goals.
The Importance of Fitness and Form
According to Ashwin, selectors are right to question whether Rohit and Virat can maintain their high standards for another two years. He clarified that working out or training alone does not guarantee selection. Players must show their match fitness and competitive edge by performing regularly in matches. The selectors, he said, are simply ensuring that the team remains well-prepared and balanced for the long-term goal of World Cup success.
Balancing Experience and Future Goals
Ashwin further stated that no coach or selector would willingly dismiss the value of experienced players like Rohit and Kohli. Their contributions and experience are invaluable. However, selectors must think practically. If either senior player faces fitness issues close to the tournament, the team might be left without a prepared alternative. Therefore, it is better to start developing future leaders like Shubman Gill early, giving them enough time to gain experience.
Support for Shubman Gill’s Captaincy
Ashwin backed the selection of Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, saying the move is both logical and forward-thinking. If Rohit were to step aside or become unavailable, Gill’s early exposure to leadership will benefit the team. Ashwin described this as a smart move from a selection standpoint, as it gives the young captain time to grow and understand leadership pressures before a major event like the World Cup.
Ashwin’s Perspective on Team Planning
Ashwin emphasised that selectors must always think ahead. He said decisions are not made based on short-term emotions but on long-term strategies. The new leadership under Shubman Gill represents a generational shift in Indian cricket, and it will help balance youth and experience. Both Kohli and Rohit still have roles to play if they show commitment, but the team must also prepare for the future.
According to Ashwin, Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee have taken a rational and balanced approach. They are not ignoring senior players but creating an environment where everyone must prove readiness. This clarity helps younger players understand their responsibilities and motivates seniors to maintain top form. Such a system, Ashwin said, ensures that the Indian team remains competitive and adaptable to changing circumstances.
Ashwin concluded by saying that the onus is now on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to prove their intent and seriousness towards India’s World Cup plans. He said that while their experience is unmatched, their participation in domestic tournaments would send a strong message about their commitment. He believes that if they continue to perform and stay fit, they will remain valuable assets to the team, but India must also look to the future with confidence and clarity.
