Etihad Rail Launches Innovation Centre at Global Rail 2025

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Etihad Rail, the company building and running the UAE’s national railway, highlighted its deep focus on innovation at Global Rail 2025. The event, held under the theme “Driving the Future of Transport and Global Connectivity,” became the stage for major announcements. Etihad Rail launched the Etihad Rail Innovation Centre (ERIC), the first national platform in the UAE fully dedicated to mobility innovation. The company also awarded winners of the Global Rail Innovation Awards 2025, providing grants to support new ideas in rail, logistics, and infrastructure.

UAE’s First National Mobility Innovation Centre

The launch of the Etihad Rail Innovation Centre is a milestone for the UAE. The ERIC is designed as a national hub for mobility and transport innovation. It will play a key role in developing solutions that transform the way people and goods move across the region. By involving industry leaders, startups, universities, and government institutions, the centre will bring collaboration under one roof. The UAE aims to position itself as a leader in innovation, connecting the initiative with wider national goals such as the UAE Vision 2031 and the UAE Net Zero 2050 strategy.

Mission of the Innovation Centre

The Innovation Centre will act as a testing ground and platform for new solutions. Its mission is clear: to identify, validate, and scale technologies that improve transport efficiency, safety, and sustainability. From rail infrastructure and rolling stock to digital systems and intermodal connectivity, ERIC will encourage new models and technologies. It will focus on turning ideas into real-world projects that support the future of smart mobility and logistics in the UAE and beyond.

Cutting-Edge Innovation Projects

Etihad Rail has already started working on several innovation projects that will be brought together at the new centre. Some of these include the use of robotics to improve inspection processes, which can make rail operations safer and more efficient. The company is also testing magnetic rail technology for energy-saving and smoother travel. In addition, Etihad Rail is encouraging homegrown ideas from within its teams, showing its commitment to developing local talent and expertise.

Supporting Startups and Researchers

ERIC is not just about Etihad Rail—it is also open to startups, researchers, and innovators. The centre will provide dedicated spaces for testing and showcasing new projects. Through incubation and acceleration programs, entrepreneurs will be able to refine their solutions and gain access to markets across the GCC. The platform will allow international startups to expand globally while working closely with industry partners in the UAE. It will also encourage hybrid collaboration between government, private companies, and universities.

Global Rail Innovation Awards 2025

Another highlight at Global Rail 2025 was the announcement of winners of the second Global Rail Innovation Awards. With a grant of AED 1 million, the awards are designed to bring forward global solutions that can shape the future of rail and logistics. The competition has grown rapidly, with 242 submissions this year—more than three times last year’s number. These entries came from across the world, proving the UAE’s growing role as a centre for international innovation in transport.

Vision and Leadership Behind the Awards

The awards were held under the vision of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail. Ameera Al Khlaifi, Director of Strategy & Growth at Etihad Rail, said the ERIC and the Global Rail Innovation Award reflect the UAE’s commitment to sustainable growth and smart mobility. According to her, these initiatives will accelerate solutions that increase efficiency, safety, and sustainability. She added that the award is an important platform to identify and develop pioneering ideas for the transport sector.

Winners of the 2025 Innovation Awards

The winners of this year’s competition reflect a mix of innovation in safety, accessibility, and sustainability. From Singapore, SBS Transit was recognised for using artificial intelligence to make sign language more accessible on public transport. From Australia, Future Maintenance Technologies (FMT) introduced robotic solutions for rolling stock inspection, improving worker safety and predictive maintenance. From Italy, TRE ALTAMIRA impressed with satellite monitoring technology that can detect early warning signs and reduce surveying costs. Each of these projects represents new directions that can transform the rail industry globally.

The UAE’s Role as a Global Hub

The success of the Global Rail Innovation Awards and the opening of the Etihad Rail Innovation Centre both highlight the UAE’s role as a leading hub for mobility innovation. By hosting international competitions, supporting startups, and driving advanced research, the country continues to attract global attention. These steps ensure that the UAE is not only building a railway network but also shaping the global future of transport.
