Renewables Provide 57% of Germany’s Electricity in 2025

Renewables Provide 57% of Germany’s Electricity in 2025

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In the first three quarters of 2025, renewable energy sources generated nearly 57 percent of Germany’s total electricity demand. This figure, reported by the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), remains consistent with levels seen in 2024. Renewables continue to form the backbone of the country’s electricity system, reflecting Germany’s strong commitment to clean energy.

Solar Energy Shows Strong Growth

Solar power output rose by almost 25 percent compared to the previous year, driven by favorable sunshine hours and an increase in solar panel installations across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. The expansion of solar capacity highlights its growing importance in the energy mix, particularly in summer months when sunlight is abundant.

Wind Energy Experiences Mixed Results

Onshore wind generation declined by 12 percent due to weaker wind conditions earlier in 2025, while offshore wind production remained stable. Analysts note that fluctuations in wind output emphasize the need for a balanced mix of renewable sources, including solar, hydro, and biomass, to maintain a reliable and continuous electricity supply.

Fossil Fuels Still Provide Backup

Despite the rise of renewables, fossil fuels remain essential to Germany’s energy security. Lignite and hard coal contributed just over 20 percent of electricity generation, and gas-fired power plants supplied around 16 percent. These sources help stabilize the grid when renewable output is insufficient or variable.

Government Adjusts Energy Transition Plans

Germany’s Economy and Energy Minister, Katherina Reiche, stated that the government is reviewing the Energiewende strategy in response to slower-than-expected growth in electricity demand. One potential adjustment includes reducing or ending subsidies for small rooftop solar installations, which have faced criticism for increasing electricity costs for households. The government, however, reaffirmed its target to reach 80 percent renewable electricity consumption by 2030.

Industry Reactions and Challenges

Energy experts welcomed the growth in solar output but highlighted challenges posed by the decline in wind production. They stressed that a diversified renewable mix is crucial to maintaining stability. Policymakers are exploring targeted support for large-scale solar and wind projects to balance costs, maintain public confidence, and ensure reliable power supply during seasonal fluctuations.

Germany’s Climate and Sustainability Goals

Germany has been a leader in renewable energy development since the early 2000s. Its climate law aims for a 65 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Achieving this goal requires expanding renewable capacity, investing in energy storage and grid infrastructure, and managing variations between solar-rich summers and wind-heavy winters.

The European Union’s Green Deal reinforces Germany’s renewable energy objectives, pushing for sustainability, energy efficiency, and innovation across member states. The latest electricity data confirms that renewables remain central to Germany’s climate strategy, even as the government evaluates adjustments to optimize the energy transition.

Germany’s electricity supply in 2025 is increasingly powered by renewable sources, with solar energy leading growth and wind energy facing seasonal challenges. The government continues to adjust policies to balance affordability, reliability, and sustainability while meeting ambitious climate and EU energy goals.
