In a commanding performance, Indiana, the top-ranked team, overwhelmed No. 5 Oregon 56-22 in the Peach Bowl semifinal held in Atlanta. This victory keeps the Hoosiers unbeaten and secures a spot in the national championship game, where they will face No. 10 Miami on January 19.
From the outset, the game revealed a distinct advantage for Indiana. Just 11 seconds in, cornerback D’Angelo Ponds intercepted Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s opening pass and returned it for a touchdown, sending shockwaves through Oregon and igniting the Hoosiers.
Quarterback Fernando Mendoza showcased his skills, completing 17 out of 20 passes with five touchdown strikes. His poise, accuracy, and leadership were evident as he effectively utilized several receivers, particularly connecting with Elijah Sarratt for two scores.
The Indiana defense equally impressed, forcing three turnovers in the first half that led to scoring opportunities. The Ducks’ offense struggled, managing a mere nine rushing yards on 17 carries during that period. Injuries to key running backs further hampered Oregon’s efforts, leaving Moore with limited options.
Holding a commanding 35-7 lead at halftime, Indiana’s defense maintained its intensity, pressuring Moore and forcing fumbles. Key players Daniel Ndukwe and Mario Landino were standout disruptors, controlling the line of scrimmage effectively.
The Hoosiers’ offense remained sharp in the second half, with Kaelon Black contributing two rushing touchdowns, showcasing Indiana’s balanced attack. Special teams also made an impact, as a blocked punt resulted in another touchdown throw from Mendoza.
Though Oregon managed some moments of success, including a touchdown drive, it wasn’t sufficient to jeopardize Indiana’s dominance. The Ducks’ errors, paired with Indiana’s speed and precision, set the tone for the game.
Following a previous playoff win against Alabama, Indiana's 15-0 record highlights their peak performance, as they aim to secure the Big Ten’s third consecutive national championship.
For Mendoza, the upcoming title match against Miami, in his home state of Florida, carries special significance. Despite the Hurricanes having the home advantage, Indiana enters the matchup with confidence and momentum.
Indiana's exceptional showing against Oregon is more than a mere victory; it’s a declaration. With solid defense, tactical offense, and strong team depth, they have established themselves as one of the leading teams in college football this season. As they head into the championship, Indiana has truly earned its place among the elite.
