India Trails West Indies by 41 Runs After Day 1 in Ahmedabad

India Trails West Indies by 41 Runs After Day 1 in Ahmedabad

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill remained unbeaten at the end of Day 1 of the first Test between India and West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India scored 121/2, trailing by 41 runs. The pair held the innings together after early wickets fell, keeping India in a comfortable position to continue on Day 2.

Early Wickets and Bowling Highlights

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan were the batters dismissed for India. Jaiswal fell to Jayden Seales after a rain interruption, while Sudharsan was out to Roston Chase, who bowled a good-length delivery that stayed low. Seales, despite taking just one wicket, was the pick of the West Indies bowlers for his controlled and disciplined spell.

Back to Test Cricket

This match marks a return to Test cricket for India. Both teams had spent two days training at the Narendra Modi Stadium before the game. For India, it is a fresh start as several past stalwarts are absent, including Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara. This is a test of the team’s depth and the new leadership under Shubman Gill, who is captaining India at home for the first time.

India’s Home Challenge

The series against West Indies is India’s first home Test series since their 3-0 whitewash loss to New Zealand last year. That series ended India’s long-standing unbeaten record at home. This makes the current series particularly important as India looks to rebuild confidence and establish a new era with fresh talent at the top and middle order.

West Indies Struggle

The West Indies side is also in transition. The team is young and inexperienced, facing challenges after being whitewashed at home by Australia, including being bowled out for just 27 in the third Test of that series. Their bowlers and batsmen will need to improve significantly to challenge India in this away series.

India enters Day 2 in a solid position, thanks to the partnership between Rahul and Gill. Both batters will aim to add more runs and put India in a commanding position before West Indies bat again. The match is not just about runs but also testing the resilience of the young Indian team under a new captaincy setup.

This Test series marks a new era for India. Young players are stepping up to replace legends who defined Indian cricket for over a decade. Shubman Gill’s leadership and performances by Rahul and others will set the tone for India’s long-term Test strategy at home and abroad.
