Author Min Jin Lee, renowned for her bestselling novel Pachinko, is back with her latest book, American Hagwon, set to release on September 29. This new work delves into the significant theme of education, a central aspect of Korean culture.
In Korea, hagwons are for-profit tutoring establishments, akin to cram schools, catering to students of all ages in subjects ranging from English to culinary arts. Lee clarifies that any private institution providing skills in language or music falls under the hagwon category.
Identifying as an “accidental historian,” Lee addresses historical and societal themes related to race, gender, and class in her narratives. American Hagwon is the third entry in her series centered on Korea and its diaspora, following Free Food for Millionaires (2007) and Pachinko (2017). Notably, Pachinko was a finalist for the National Book Award and is now a celebrated Apple TV+ series, recognized as the 15th best novel of the 21st century by The New York Times in 2024.
Published by Cardinal, this novel reflects on abrupt life changes and the necessity for families to adapt to instability. The narrative traverses Korea, Australia, and Southern California, chronicling a middle-class Korean family's struggles during the Asian financial crisis.
Reagan Arthur, Publisher and Senior Vice President at Cardinal, commended Lee’s storytelling, stating it “captures generational shifts through unforgettable, intricately crafted characters that resonate with readers.”
Min Jin Lee, born in Seoul and relocated to New York City at age seven, has a background that includes the Bronx High School of Science, Yale University, and Georgetown University Law School. Her meticulous writing process involves years of research and interviews, earning her the nickname “the turtle” from her father for her deliberate pace.
“My aim is to reflect societal values and, as the youth say, conduct a ‘vibe check,’” says Lee, emphasizing her intent to weave history with genuine human experiences.
