In Foshan city, located in Guangdong Province, south China, a norovirus outbreak has impacted a senior high school, affecting 103 students, local health authorities confirmed on Saturday. Officials stated that all students are in stable condition, with no reports of severe or fatal cases thus far.
The affected students at Xinghui Middle School began exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea in recent days. Initial medical examinations have indicated norovirus as the cause of the illness, a virus recognized for inducing acute gastroenteritis.
Following the identification of these cases, school officials quickly implemented prevention and control strategies. The entire campus underwent a rigorous disinfection process, and heightened health monitoring has been put in place. Daily attendance checks are conducted to facilitate early detection of any new cases, with symptomatic students closely watched and provided necessary care.
An epidemiological investigation is actively tracing the infection source and evaluating the risk of further transmission. Health authorities are analyzing how the virus may have spread in the school, considering factors such as contaminated food, water, or close interactions.
According to local disease control authorities, Guangdong typically experiences its annual norovirus epidemic season from October through March. This period increases the likelihood of outbreaks, particularly in densely populated areas like schools, dormitories, and childcare centers.
Norovirus is among the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis globally. It spreads quickly through direct contact, tainted food or water, and infected surfaces. While most cases resolve independently, rapid transmission can occur if hygiene protocols are neglected.
Health officials have urged vigilance among schools, parents, and students during this peak season to maintain excellent hand hygiene, ensure proper sanitation, and report symptoms immediately to mitigate the spread.
