H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Khorfakkan, inaugurated the new Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre in Khorfakkan. The event marked an important step in promoting marine science and environmental sustainability in the Emirate of Sharjah.
On Thursday morning, the Ruler of Sharjah unveiled the commemorative plaque to officially open the centre. After the unveiling, he toured the centre’s sections and facilities. The centre houses 12 specialised laboratories focused on areas like histology, wet lab studies, microbiology, and environmental analysis.
The Ruler was introduced to several high-tech facilities, including the Advanced Microscopy Centre, Marine Chemistry Analysis Unit, and the GIS and remote sensing systems. He also reviewed the integrated experimental tank system, seawater treatment unit, marine research port, and a training area for scientific diving. These facilities are designed to help researchers and students conduct marine studies at a global level.
During his visit, Sheikh Sultan observed demonstrations showing how the centre’s modern equipment detects marine pollution, measures solid waste, and separates clean and polluted water samples. He also learned about methods to monitor bacterial growth in marine environments. These research tools will help find better ways to protect the sea and marine life from pollution.
The Ruler was briefed about ongoing student research projects and field studies supervised by academic experts. Students collect and analyse data that contribute to international scientific publications. This research not only strengthens Sharjah’s position in global academia but also helps the UAE gain recognition in marine science organisations.
The centre works in academic partnership with the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. Students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Marine and Aquatic Sciences benefit from this partnership, which includes hands-on training and professional certifications such as scientific diving. Graduates are prepared for careers in both the public and private sectors, as well as academia.
Students from the College of Marine and Aquatic Sciences who won first place in the Sharjah Government Communication Award’s University Challenge category presented their project titled “Ocean Sustainability.” They also showcased a prototype of an advanced submarine equipped with smart sensors to monitor the marine environment, demonstrating their creativity and innovation in marine protection.
The Ruler also visited the classrooms and the specialised library at the centre, which includes a wide range of marine science reference materials. The centre collaborates with international institutions such as the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the National Oceanography Centre, and the University of Cambridge. These partnerships aim to promote innovation and encourage cooperation among scientists worldwide.
During the ceremony, Sheikh Sultan presented honorary professorship certificates from the University of Exeter to Dr Ali Hilal Alnaqbi, Chancellor of the University of Khorfakkan; Dr Steven Kidman, Director of the Marine Science Research Centre; and Dr Henrik Stahl, Dean of the College of Marine and Aquatic Sciences. They were honoured for their contributions to marine education, research, and environmental protection.
The centre’s academic programs aim to train students in different marine science fields such as molecular biology, marine ecology, microbiology, and wildlife biology. Students first learn basic science and later progress to research-based projects related to the UAE’s unique coastal ecosystems. The facility’s modern laboratories and fieldwork opportunities give students practical experience in ocean studies.
The Ruler emphasised that the new centre will become a world-class institution in marine science and ocean sustainability. It will also support the UAE’s vision of protecting natural resources and developing a sustainable blue economy. This centre represents a major investment in education, research, and the environment, ensuring Sharjah remains a leader in sustainable development.
The inauguration was attended by several senior officials including Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority; Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Government Relations; Amna Al Dhahak Al Shamsi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; and Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Consultative Council.
