SpaceX Starship Completes First Successful Test Flight After IPO

SpaceX Starship Completes First Successful Test Flight After IPO

Post by : Bianca Haleem

SpaceX's Starship successfully completed its first test flight since the company became publicly listed, marking another major milestone in the development of the world's largest rocket system.

Following the successful mission, SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk shared an update on X, saying, "Starship is intact, floating in the ocean and transmitting telemetry!"

The spacecraft made a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean, where it remained intact while continuing to send flight data. SpaceX employees watching the live broadcast from the company's Starbase celebrated as the vehicle safely completed its mission.

Reacting during the livestream, SpaceX spokesperson Dan Huot said, "I'm losing my mind right now. This is the first time we've put an intact Starship in the water."

He added, "This is a dream scenario for the team that's trying to get this heat shield data."

Mission Repeated Key Flight Objectives

The latest mission followed a largely successful Starship test carried out in May, which introduced the company's third-generation Starship design.

The 13th test flight was intended to repeat those major flight objectives while confirming that design improvements performed as expected without experiencing the issues seen during the previous mission.

During the flight, the upper stage successfully deployed 20 Starlink V3 satellites, a demonstration SpaceX said "will provide critical data as we prepare to expand our Starlink constellation" for its satellite internet service.

The mission lasted approximately one hour and also focused on evaluating upgrades made to the spacecraft's heat shield during atmospheric re-entry.

After the May flight, SpaceX said it had implemented "several modifications to hardware and software to address issues seen on the previous flight."

Booster Landing Burn Not Fully Successful

Although the overall mission achieved its primary objectives, SpaceX said the booster's landing burn did not perform exactly as planned.

Dan Huot explained that it appeared not all 13 engines ignited during the initial landing burn.

"Just looking at the booster real quick, it didn't look like we lit all 13 engines that we were planning for that initial land and burn," Huot said.

He added, "We were targeting a softer splash on it, and as you saw, it came in with quite a bit of velocity."

Earlier Launch Delays

The successful launch came after an earlier attempt was stopped automatically just as the booster engines were beginning to ignite because some engines failed to start.

The mission was then postponed further due to weather and visibility concerns before Friday's successful launch.

First Flight Since SpaceX Went Public

Friday's mission was the first Starship test flight since SpaceX began trading publicly following its record initial public offering in June.

The company has continued expanding its Starlink satellite internet service while also outlining plans involving AI data centres in space.

NASA Counting on Starship for Future Moon Missions

Starship remains an important part of NASA's future lunar exploration programme.

SpaceX is under contract with NASA to develop a modified version of Starship that will serve as a lunar landing system.

After sharing an image of Starship flying past the Moon, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman wrote, "Pretty clear from this shot that SpaceX knows where we are going!"

He added, "When Starship comes online, its capabilities will be game-changing, not least of which will be ensuring we never give up the Moon again!"
