Thailand and Japan Strengthen Livestock Trade Relations

Post by : Shakul

Thailand is advancing its agricultural ties with Japan, aiming to boost livestock exports and widen access to international markets. A Thai delegation, headed by Sarawut Nueangchamnong, Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, has held crucial discussions with officials from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Enhancing Animal Health and Safety

The conversations revolved around improving animal health standards and implementing effective food safety protocols. Officials shared insights into strengthening veterinary collaborations and enhancing disease prevention measures to meet global standards and consumer demand.

Advancements in Avian Influenza Management

A significant topic was the progress on measures related to Avian Influenza Zoning. Thailand, through its Department of Livestock Development, is establishing regional systems to control diseases, enhancing export viability, and boosting consumer confidence in Japan. Reports suggest that Japanese authorities view this progress favorably and are actively reviewing it.

Growth in Pork Export Potential

Thailand is also aiming to broaden its cooked pork exports to Japan. Officials expressed a positive reception towards proposals for importing cooked pork with bones and processed pork intestines. Thai representatives are in the process of preparing additional technical documents to ensure adherence to safety and hygiene requirements.

Animal Feed Trade Expansion

Discussions included the potential for increased trade in animal feed ingredients, such as poultry meal and by-products. This expansion could provide fresh opportunities for Thai livestock enterprises and strengthen bilateral agricultural trade.

Continued Growth in Livestock Exports

Thailand’s livestock exports to Japan are thriving, with poultry meat and products generating over 67 billion baht in 2025, and pet food exports surpassing 14 billion baht. Processed meats like sausages and bacon have also significantly contributed to the trade growth.

Government's Commitment to Expansion

Thai officials have reiterated their support for local livestock producers and exporters. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives will continue to advocate for products that meet international standards while assisting businesses in expanding to global markets and advancing Thailand's economic development.
