Switch 2 Breaks Records, Nintendo Hikes Profit Forecast

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Nintendo’s latest console, the Switch 2, has raced to the top as the fastest-selling system since its June release, driven by strong demand for flagship titles including Super Mario and Mario Kart World.

The company says Switch 2 shipments exceeded 10 million units in the first half of the 2025-26 fiscal year. On that strength, Nintendo raised its full-year net profit projection to 350 billion yen (about $2.3 billion), up from a prior estimate of 300 billion yen. Net profit for April through September reached nearly 200 billion yen, an 83% increase from the same period a year earlier.

The original Switch, introduced in 2017, went on to sell more than 154 million units and is the third best-selling console ever. Its surge in popularity during the pandemic—helped by hits such as Animal Crossing—laid the groundwork for the early success of the Switch 2. Nintendo still regards hardware as central to its business even as it expands into films and theme-park attractions.

New releases like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World continue to post robust sales, and Nintendo plans to sustain momentum by adding titles regularly. The company also sees growth opportunities in markets such as China, the Middle East and other Asian regions as it aims to replicate the global reach of the original Switch.

The franchise’s cultural influence remains strong: 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. Fans can expect a sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie in April 2026, and Mario will make his debut as a balloon in New York’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade later this year.

With record sales and an expanding slate of games and media, the Switch 2 is shaping up as a major entertainment platform with lasting impact on the gaming industry.
