New YouTube Feature Empowers Parents to Manage Kids' Shorts Viewing Time

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

YouTube has rolled out a new feature designed to help parents and young viewers better oversee the time spent on YouTube Shorts. These brief and rapid videos are especially popular with children and teens. With many parents expressing concerns over excessive screen time affecting their children's studies and sleep, this update aims to alleviate those worries effectively.

The new functionality enables users to establish a daily time limit for viewing Shorts. Once this allotted time is up, YouTube presents a reminder on the screen indicating that the daily limit has been reached. This reminder doesn't completely block the app; instead, it encourages users to pause and reflect before deciding to continue watching. The goal is to foster mindfulness rather than impose strict restrictions.

Setting this limit is straightforward for parents via the YouTube mobile app. After launching the app, they can navigate to the settings section and select the option to control the Shorts feed. Subsequently, they can designate how much time their child can spend each day on Shorts. YouTube automatically monitors the viewing time.

This feature proves invaluable for children who often lose track of time when viewing short clips. Given that Shorts are crafted to be quick and captivating, one video frequently leads to the next without a clear stopping point. The daily reminder effectively disrupts this cycle, fostering healthier digital behaviors.

The update is currently accessible through YouTube’s mobile apps and is available for both parents and adults looking to manage their own screen time. It showcases an increasing commitment by tech firms to prioritize digital well-being instead of merely boosting user engagement.

For families, this tool facilitates better dialogues about responsible internet use. It helps children realize the importance of balancing online fun with studies, family time, rest, and play, reinforcing that time offline is equally valuable.
