Amid concerns about the economy, including rising prices and layoffs, shoppers showed up in large numbers on Black Friday, indicating the start of the holiday shopping season. Many indulged in festive treats while searching for bargains.
At Lakeside Shopping Center close to New Orleans, shoppers were greeted with a chance to sip champagne when spending over $50. Lacie Lemoine was shopping with her grandmother and remarked, “Sipping and shopping is the best. It’s a New Orleans tradition.” Her grandmother replied, “The economy may be tough, but celebrating within your means is still important.”
Major shopping venues across the nation experienced significant turnout. Hotspots like Mall of America in Minnesota and Westfield Garden State Plaza in New Jersey reported some of their most trafficked days. Enthusiastic early birds queued long before store openings to seize the best sales.
Retail experts noted that consumers are becoming increasingly discerning—scouting for deals but still willing to invest in special items. Matthew Shay, CEO of a national retail agency, stated, “Holidays signify a unique segment of spending. People intentionally save, plan, and prioritize this time.”
Shoppers like Denise Thevenot from Louisiana expressed they had not curtailed their spending, despite financial worries. Retailers across New York and New Jersey, including Target and Macy’s, attracted large crowds with enticing early bird specials and robust discounts.
While foot traffic remains strong, online sales are on the rise too, now accounting for over 30% of holiday shopping. From November 1 to 23, e-commerce spending hit $79.7 billion, with Thanksgiving Day alone seeing $6.4 billion in sales.
Economists highlight that consumers are cautious but continue to engage in holiday shopping, showcasing the lasting appeal of Black Friday traditions.
