Abu Dhabi ECA Funds 5 New Studies to Improve Early Childhood

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) has launched the third cycle of its Research Grants Program, funding five new research projects aimed at improving understanding of the factors that shape children's early years and development in Abu Dhabi.

The new studies focus on key areas including education, family engagement, cultural identity, and child wellbeing. Through these projects, ECA aims to provide valuable evidence that can help policymakers, educators, and families make better decisions for children’s learning and development.

Several of the funded projects will examine how children, parents, and caregivers view teachers and schools, and how these perceptions affect children's academic performance and social growth. The research will also provide recommendations to strengthen education policies, improve the value of early learning, and create more inclusive and supportive learning environments.

Other projects will explore the role of Emirati culture in modern society. Researchers will study how traditions and values are passed from one generation to the next, how families and technology influence cultural identity, and how cultural practices affect the development of young children.

The projects are being carried out in partnership with leading academic institutions, including Emirates College for Advanced Education and United Arab Emirates University.

Among the topics being studied are the use of artificial intelligence to better understand children's feelings about school, ways to strengthen partnerships between families and early education providers, and the role of educational leadership in improving parental involvement in children's learning.

Additional research will focus on the impact of culture on child development and quality of life, as well as how social changes and modern lifestyles are influencing traditional Emirati practices, particularly in nutrition and childcare.

To support high-quality research, ECA has also introduced capacity-building programmes for researchers. A specialised workshop on child assent was recently organised to help researchers engage children in research in a safe, ethical, and age-appropriate manner. Child assent refers to a child’s agreement to participate in research in a way they can understand.

Dr Yousef Al Hammadi, Executive Director of Knowledge and Impact at ECA, said that children’s early experiences are shaped by the people, environments, and systems around them. He added that ECA is investing in research that reflects the real needs and experiences of children and families in Abu Dhabi, helping decision-makers develop more effective policies and programmes.

Hamda Al Suwaidi, Head of Research and Continuous Development at ECA, said research should not only focus on children but should also consider their experiences whenever appropriate. She emphasized the importance of ensuring children's voices and wellbeing remain central to the research process.

Since 2020, ECA has awarded 23 research grants with total funding of nearly AED 25 million. Research supported by the authority has been published in more than 25 international academic publications and presented at over 135 local, regional, and international conferences and events.

The programme has also played a key role in developing national research talent, with more than 100 early-career Emirati researchers receiving training in fields such as economics, engineering, psychology, and public health.

Through these initiatives, ECA continues to strengthen early childhood research in Abu Dhabi while building local expertise to better support children and families across the emirate.
