Residents Near Old Fort Urged to Stay Indoors Amid Landslide Threat

Post by : Shweta

In British Columbia, local authorities have ordered residents of the Old Fort area to stay indoors following the emergence of new instability signs at a previously identified landslide location. Officials advise minimizing movement and prioritizing safety amid rising concerns.

The alert was prompted by visible cracking observed at the site of the notorious Old Fort landslide, situated approximately five kilometers south of Fort St. John. These cracks indicate possible ground shifts, increasing fears of further slope movement that could threaten nearby residences and infrastructure.

To mitigate risks, Old Fort Road, the primary access route for local residents, has been shut down. Emergency Info BC has informed the impacted populace to remain sheltered until the road is deemed safe for reopening. Officials emphasized that this precaution is crucial for ensuring public safety while evaluations are ongoing.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit announced that a comprehensive technical assessment of the area will be conducted before any decisions regarding road reopening are made. While acknowledging the inconvenience this may cause, authorities reiterated that safeguarding public welfare is their utmost concern.

Emergency response efforts are underway in collaboration with various agencies, including the Peace River Regional District and the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness. Their priority is to monitor the landslide situation, ensure resident safety, and plan for the restoration of roadway access as conditions permit.

Historically, the Old Fort area has faced landslide issues. In 2018, a significant slide affected the sole road serving the small community of around 150 residents, necessitating evacuations. The problem escalated in 2020, with heavy rainfall causing additional displacement, further damaging this critical road.

Given this background, officials are approaching the current scenario with caution. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to review their emergency preparedness measures. Authorities will continue to monitor the site closely and will issue updates as new information becomes available.

This situation underscores the persistent risks faced by communities situated near unstable land, especially in areas susceptible to landslides due to climatic and geological factors.
