Riyadh Hosts Major Conference on Nuclear Emergency Response

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The International Conference on Preparedness and Response to Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies (EPR2025) began in Riyadh on Monday. The event is organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC). This four-day conference is held under the theme “Building the Future in an Evolving World.” It brings together international and local organizations, specialists, and experts from more than 100 countries.

EPR2025 is one of the largest global gatherings focused on improving how countries prepare for and respond to nuclear and radiological emergencies. The conference includes more than 120 scientific research papers, 100 posters, and several panel discussions. Over 700 experts from various fields are taking part, along with representatives from more than six major international organizations. The event aims to share global experience, review challenges, and discuss the latest methods used to handle nuclear-related emergencies safely and efficiently.

A major part of the conference focuses on best practices that help countries respond quickly and effectively during nuclear or radiological incidents. A special exhibition is also being held alongside the conference. In this exhibition, national and international bodies are presenting their real-life experience in emergency planning, early warning systems, and response techniques. Global companies are also displaying new technologies designed to support fast and safe action during nuclear emergencies. These technologies are essential for improving detection, communication, and coordination.

During the opening ceremony, the NRRC explained that the concept of emergency preparedness is always changing. As the world develops, countries must update their systems to deal with new risks, adopt modern tools, and ensure strong cooperation among national organizations. The commission said that emergency readiness is not built by one institution alone. It requires governments, experts, and communities to work together through continuous efforts. These efforts must be proactive, well-coordinated, and based on quick decision-making.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also spoke about the importance of building long-term national capacities. The agency said that every country should strengthen its own emergency response system while also working closely with the international community. It highlighted the importance of sharing information, learning from past incidents, and increasing technical cooperation among countries. These steps help reduce the impact of nuclear and radiological emergencies and improve global safety.

The IAEA further emphasized the importance of international agreements and systems it oversees. Saudi Arabia is an active member of many of these frameworks. The agency also pointed to the international networks and platforms that help countries stay connected and informed. These global systems make it easier for countries to support each other and coordinate their response when emergencies occur.

EPR2025 is especially significant because it is the first time this conference is being held outside the IAEA headquarters. Hosting this event marks an important milestone for Saudi Arabia and the international community. The main goal of the conference is to strengthen global readiness and improve the capability of countries to handle nuclear and radiological emergencies in a rapidly changing world.

The event provides a space where experts can exchange ideas, study new challenges, discuss innovations, and review systems that help integrate national and international efforts. Saudi Arabia’s selection as the host reflects its growing strength in nuclear safety, its advanced regulatory development, and its expanding ability to support global cooperation in this vital sector.

By hosting EPR2025, Saudi Arabia shows its commitment to improving emergency response, supporting global safety standards, and contributing to international preparedness efforts. The conference is expected to bring valuable knowledge, new technologies, and stronger partnerships that will benefit countries around the world.
