Multiple explosions carried out by suspected suicide bombers hit Maiduguri, a major city in northeastern Nigeria, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 100 others, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Nahum Kenneth Daso said initial investigations indicate that the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. He confirmed that 23 people lost their lives, while 108 others suffered injuries of varying severity.
The blasts occurred on Monday evening, just hours after another attack on a military post between Sunday night and early Monday. Authorities believe jihadist groups were behind both incidents.
These attacks have disturbed a period of relative calm in Maiduguri. The city had remained more peaceful in recent months as ongoing insurgent activities shifted toward rural areas.
However, militant groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have recently increased their attacks in northeastern Nigeria.
The insurgency, which has lasted for over 16 years, has claimed more than 40,000 lives and displaced around two million people across the region.
Witnesses at a local hospital reported seeing dozens of injured victims receiving treatment, while several bodies were placed outside the facility.
Police said that the situation is now under control. Security forces have increased their presence across Maiduguri to prevent further attacks, and normal life is gradually returning to the affected areas.
