A landmark achievement has been reached in the UK’s green energy sector with the first turbine installation at the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, a collaboration between Masdar and ScottishPower. This ambitious project has established a new UK benchmark by utilizing 115-metre turbine blades—surpassing any previously installed in British waters, each measuring longer than a Premier League football field.
Once completed, the wind farm will comprise 95 turbines, all 285 blades produced at Siemens Gamesa’s Hull facility, reinforcing local manufacturing and creating job opportunities.
Standing around 262 metres tall, these turbines exceed the observation deck of The Shard. Featuring 14MW capacity with a rotor diameter of 236 metres, they promise to generate substantial electricity.
Each complete turn of a turbine can provide enough energy for a UK home for over four days, plus charge approximately 1,700 mobile phones or brew nearly 1,000 cups of tea.
Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, heralded this achievement as a "defining moment" for their endeavors in clean energy. He underlined that East Anglia THREE will stand as their largest and most potent wind farm, driving billions in investments, thousands of construction jobs, and over 100 permanent roles in the East of England.
Located off the Suffolk coast, anticipated to provide clean energy to around 1.3 million UK homes upon completion, this project is critical for enhancing national energy security and curbing reliance on fossil fuels.
Husain Al Meer, Director of Global Offshore Wind at Masdar, referred to the initiative as pivotal for advancing the UK’s offshore wind industry, stressing the significance of international partnerships to meet environmental objectives and foster sustainable economic expansion.
The installation is being conducted by Cadeler aboard its Wind Osprey jack-up vessel, with the Wind Pace vessel soon to join, optimizing installation speed and efficiency.
The 115-metre blades are seven metres longer than the previous record of 108 metres, also developed by Siemens Gamesa. The Hull facility currently employs over 1,400 workers and is committed to further workforce development.
East Anglia THREE is on track to emerge as one of the world’s most significant offshore wind farms, serving a crucial role in the UK’s transition to reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
