Renewable Energy Surpasses Global Demand in 2025

Post by : Shakul

In a groundbreaking report by Ember, it was revealed that renewable energy sources exceeded global electricity demand for the first time in 2025. This marks a pivotal moment in the global transition towards sustainable energy.

The data showed a remarkable increase of 887 terawatt hours in renewable energy generation, outpacing the global demand growth of 849 terawatt hours. This surge was largely attributed to the accelerated growth of solar power, particularly in China and India.

Renewable sources, including solar, wind, and hydropower, constituted over a third of the global electricity output, reaching an impressive 33.8%. Meanwhile, the share of coal dropped below one-third, illustrating a slow but steady shift away from fossil fuels.

Solar power was instrumental in this evolution, achieving 30% growth in 2025 and covering nearly three-quarters of the rise in electricity demand. Together with wind energy, renewables met nearly all additional requirements throughout the year.

China spearheaded global solar advancements, contributing to over half of the world’s increase in solar capacity. India also made notable progress in solar and wind sectors, alongside improved hydropower generation.

Additionally, the report pointed out a 46% increase in battery storage technology, driven by lower costs, enhancing solar energy usability after sunset, thus boosting its reliability and efficiency.

Experts indicate that renewable energy can now effectively cater to the rising global demand while minimizing fossil fuel dependency. However, they emphasize the need for ongoing investments and supportive policies to maintain this momentum and further lower carbon emissions.
