Fashion Commission Revives Saudi Heritage Through Arts and Crafts

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Fashion Commission successfully concluded its initiative titled "Saudi Heritage Revival: Arts and Handcrafts," a program aimed at preserving traditional Saudi handcrafts while empowering emerging designers. The program took place at FCR (Future Creative Residence), the commission’s creative hub, and aligns with national efforts to protect cultural heritage and promote sustainable fashion practices.

The initiative provided a five-day series of workshops led by experienced experts, covering traditional embroidery, beadwork, and the modern use of Swarovski crystals in contemporary designs. Participants gained both technical skills and conceptual knowledge, learning how to blend Saudi cultural elements with innovative fashion techniques. The training was designed to help designers develop unique garments inspired by their heritage while also addressing global fashion standards.

After completing the workshops, participants created their final garments, receiving guidance and individual feedback from Swarovski specialists. They also had access to a professional studio to photograph their designs before the final jury evaluation. This step allowed designers to present their work in a professional format, preparing them for both local and international recognition.

The initiative concluded with a final ceremony at FCR, where participants showcased their completed designs. The jury selected the winner as Rola Mutlaq Alanzi, highlighting her innovative approach to combining traditional elements with modern fashion. The top five designers—Rola Mutlaq Alanzi, Abdullah Al-Bargi, Latifa Al-Buajan, Hadeel Abdulaziz, and Arwa Al-Suhaim—were nominated to take part in Swarovski’s international academic competition, providing them with a global platform to showcase their talents.

The Fashion Commission emphasized that the program’s main goal is to support and nurture local talent while keeping Saudi cultural heritage alive through creative expression. By equipping designers with technical skills, cultural knowledge, and exposure to global fashion trends, the initiative strengthens the foundations of a sustainable and thriving fashion industry in Saudi Arabia.

This program not only highlights traditional handcrafts but also encourages designers to experiment with modern materials and techniques. Participants learned how to creatively incorporate cultural motifs, embroidery, and Swarovski crystals into contemporary fashion pieces, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. The training and mentorship provided a platform for emerging designers to showcase their creativity while promoting the rich cultural legacy of Saudi Arabia.

Through initiatives like "Saudi Heritage Revival," the Fashion Commission continues to play a key role in cultivating a new generation of designers who honor their roots while exploring innovative design practices. The program’s success demonstrates how cultural preservation and modern fashion can work hand-in-hand, empowering designers to contribute to a sustainable fashion ecosystem.

By combining education, mentorship, and professional exposure, the initiative ensures that Saudi heritage continues to inspire modern fashion trends globally. The event reflects the commission’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural pride in the fashion industry.
