Rare Snowfall Seen Near Riyadh After More Than Thirty Years

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

A rare weather event surprised residents in Saudi Arabia on Monday morning as snowfall was seen in northern areas of the country after more than 30 years. The unusual scene was reported near the Tuwaiq mountain range, west of Riyadh, creating excitement among locals.

Saudi Arabia is widely known for its desert landscape and extreme heat, making this winter scene highly unexpected. Many people gathered to watch the snowfall, while videos shared online showed children and young adults enjoying the moment near the capital.

Experts say the event is linked to climate change, which is causing unusual and unpredictable weather patterns in different parts of the world. The cold temperatures turned some regions into a temporary winter-like setting.

Meteorologists explained that snowfall and hail can sometimes occur in elevated areas such as Tabuk during winter when cold air clashes with moisture in the region. Although rare, such weather conditions can still develop under specific circumstances.

Climate specialists have also pointed out that global warming can increase extreme weather events, leading to sudden cold waves and heavy precipitation even in typically hot regions like Saudi Arabia.

The National Meteorological Centre had earlier warned of a sharp drop in temperatures in northern areas and advised people to remain cautious. Last week, the Trojena highlands in the Tabuk region also experienced unexpected snowfall, adding to the unusual winter conditions.
