The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) announced that astronaut Mohammad AlMulla successfully completed the two-week CAVES training programme organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Italy. The programme took place across Molise and Campania regions and included astronauts from ESA, JAXA, and NASA, reflecting the collaborative nature of modern space exploration.
Purpose of CAVES Training
CAVES, which stands for Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behaviour and performance Skills, is designed to prepare astronauts for the challenges of working in isolated and extreme environments, similar to space missions. The training emphasises teamwork, safety, and operational efficiency under demanding conditions, mirroring those faced during actual space expeditions.
Training Activities and Environment
During the programme, AlMulla participated in technical lectures, outdoor exercises, and a multi-day underground expedition. Astronauts lived and worked in complete isolation, facing confined spaces, limited privacy, minimal equipment, and technical challenges. These conditions replicate aspects of spaceflight, including the lack of natural day-night cycles and the constant presence of operational risks.
Skills and Knowledge Gained
Throughout the CAVES training, participants developed expertise in subterranean exploration, scientific research, and mapping techniques. AlMulla and his peers also honed essential soft skills, such as communication, leadership, stress management, and decision-making.
