The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth in Oman, through its Literary Forum, organized an important panel discussion under the title, “The Role of Folk Culture in Providing Means for Sustainable Development: Omani Culture as a Model.” This event aimed to show how traditional culture and heritage can contribute to long-term growth and development in society. The session took place with the participation of experts and researchers in the field of culture and development.
Focus Of The Panel
The discussion focused on the connection between folk culture and sustainable development. It showed how traditions, stories, songs, crafts, and cultural practices can go beyond entertainment and history, and instead be used as tools to strengthen the economy, protect the environment, and build strong societies. By looking at Omani culture as an example, the panel explained how cultural heritage can guide future planning for development.
Research Paper Presentation
At the session, Dr. Hajer Abdulrahman Harrathi, an associate professor of ancient Arabic literature at Sohar University, presented a detailed research paper. She is well known as a researcher in folk culture, interdisciplinary studies, and cultural economics. Her paper gave deep insights into the value of folk culture in Oman and its ability to become a bridge between the past and the future.
Folk Culture As A Development Pillar
In her presentation, Dr. Harrathi explained that folk culture is not just about old traditions or stories. Instead, it is a living and valuable part of society. She highlighted that Omani folk culture has the power to support sustainable development by linking it with the economy, the society, and the environment. For example, traditional crafts can support local economies, folk festivals can attract tourism, and cultural practices can encourage unity and social strength.
Intangible Cultural Heritage
The paper placed strong focus on intangible cultural heritage. This refers to cultural elements that cannot be touched but are passed down from generation to generation, such as oral traditions, songs, dances, poetry, skills, and local knowledge. Dr. Harrathi emphasized that these traditions have an important functional value. They can be turned into tools for growth, innovation, and sustainable practices that help both individuals and communities.
Linking Culture To Economy
One of the key points raised in the discussion was the economic value of folk culture. Traditional industries, local crafts, and cultural tourism are examples of how intangible heritage can provide jobs and income. Dr. Harrathi suggested that if folk traditions are properly supported, they can open opportunities for small businesses, help diversify the economy, and reduce dependence on limited resources. Folk markets and cultural events, for instance, can attract both local and international visitors.
Social Benefits Of Folk Culture
The panel also stressed the social benefits of folk culture. It strengthens ties among communities, creates a sense of pride, and helps people feel connected to their roots. By sharing stories, songs, and traditional practices, different generations can understand each other better. This unity plays an important role in sustainable development because strong societies are more prepared to face challenges and support progress.
Environmental Connections
Folk culture is also closely linked to the environment. Many traditional practices in Oman are based on respect for nature, sustainable use of natural resources, and harmonious living with the surroundings. By reviving these practices, communities can find eco-friendly solutions for modern problems. For example, traditional water systems, farming methods, and crafts often involve sustainable methods that can be adapted today.
Building National Identity
Another central theme in the discussion was the role of folk culture in building national identity. Dr. Harrathi pointed out that Omani culture provides a strong base for unity and pride. A clear national identity helps people work together toward common goals, which is essential for sustainable development. Folk culture, therefore, not only preserves history but also shapes the vision for the future.
Encouraging Innovation Through Culture
The research showed that folk culture can inspire creativity and innovation. Artists, entrepreneurs, and cultural workers can use traditional knowledge to create new ideas, products, and services. This cultural innovation contributes to the economy, brings recognition to local talent, and makes Oman stand out globally as a country that values both heritage and progress.
Challenges In Preserving Culture
Despite the many benefits, there are also challenges. The panel discussion touched on the risk of losing cultural practices due to globalization, modern lifestyle changes, and lack of awareness among the younger generation. The participants stressed the need to document, protect, and promote folk traditions so that they remain alive and useful in modern times.
Future Role Of Folk Culture
The session ended with the idea that folk culture should not remain only in museums or academic studies. Instead, it should be integrated into development strategies, school curriculums, and national plans. By doing this, Oman can make sure that cultural heritage plays a real role in shaping sustainable economic, social, and environmental progress.
The Literary Forum’s panel highlighted a simple yet powerful truth: culture is not just about the past, but also about the future. Omani folk culture has the potential to be a real driver of development if it is used wisely. The session reminded everyone that culture is a valuable resource that can strengthen societies, inspire innovation, and connect people to their identity while supporting national growth.
