India has issued a strong advisory for its citizens in Nepal after violent youth-led protests shook the country. The protests, mainly driven by Nepal’s young generation known as Gen Z, led to the deaths of at least 20 people and injuries to more than 300 others. The unrest has created major safety concerns for locals as well as foreigners living or traveling in Nepal.
The Indian government, through its Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), advised Indians in Nepal to remain very cautious and follow instructions from local authorities. Helpline numbers have also been provided for assistance.
Background Of The Nepal Protests
The protests began after the Nepalese government announced a ban on 26 social media platforms, including popular sites like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter). The government, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, explained that these platforms were banned to bring them under regulation.
However, young people in Nepal saw the ban as an attack on their freedom of speech and digital rights. Most of the demonstrators belonged to the Gen Z generation, who actively use social media to communicate, share information, and organize activities.
The government’s decision led to large demonstrations across major cities, and the protests quickly escalated into violent clashes between protesters and police.
India’s Official Statement
India’s MEA released a statement saying it was closely monitoring the situation. The statement expressed sorrow over the deaths of so many young people and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The MEA said: "We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured."
India also called on all sides in Nepal to remain calm, avoid violence, and try to resolve their differences through dialogue and peaceful talks.
Travel Advisory For Indians
Due to the seriousness of the protests, India issued a travel advisory for its citizens. It asked those currently living in Nepal to stay indoors, avoid crowded places, and follow all instructions from Nepali authorities.
The advisory also asked Indians who were planning to visit Nepal to postpone their trips until the situation improves.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu shared helpline numbers for citizens who may require urgent help:
+977 – 980 860 2881 (WhatsApp calls also)
+977 – 981 032 6134 (WhatsApp calls also)
This step was taken to ensure that Indians in Nepal have direct contact points for emergencies.
Flights Cancelled Between India And Nepal
The unrest also disrupted air travel between India and Nepal. Airlines like Air India and IndiGo cancelled flights to and from Kathmandu airport, which had been closed due to the volatile situation.
Air India cancelled several flights on the Delhi-Kathmandu route and said it was monitoring the situation. IndiGo also suspended its operations at Kathmandu airport and informed passengers that they could either reschedule their flights or request refunds.
This suspension of flights created difficulties for passengers who were either stuck in Nepal or unable to reach the country.
Curfew And Army Deployment In Nepal
The protests grew so violent that the Nepalese authorities had to impose curfews in Kathmandu and several other cities. The government also deployed the Nepali Army to protect important roads and the area around the parliament complex in New Baneshwor.
This step showed the seriousness of the protests, which had turned into the deadliest youth uprising in Nepal in many years.
Political Fallout In Nepal
The crisis also had political consequences. Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned from his position, taking moral responsibility for the deaths and destruction caused during the protests.
Prime Minister Oli, in a statement, said his government would not allow arrogance or activities that harm the nation. However, the government later gave in to the demands of protesters by lifting the ban on social media platforms.
The Ministry of Information instructed agencies to restore access to the blocked social media sites, showing how powerful the Gen Z protests had become.
Impact On Nepalese Society
The protests highlight the deep frustration among Nepal’s youth. Gen Z forms a large part of Nepal’s population, and their heavy use of social media means they are deeply affected by such bans.
The sudden ban not only silenced communication but also disrupted businesses, online education, and daily communication for millions of people. This explains why the protests turned into such a strong movement.
The tragic deaths and injuries have shocked Nepal and raised concerns about how the government handles public anger and digital freedom.
India’s Role As A Close Neighbour
India has always shared a close bond with Nepal, linked by geography, culture, and history. This is why India quickly responded to the crisis with both concern and caution.
By issuing advisories, providing helplines, and cancelling flights, India has shown its priority is to protect its citizens. At the same time, by urging Nepal to resolve the issue peacefully, India has maintained its role as a supportive neighbour.
The violent Gen Z protests in Nepal have shaken the country and drawn international attention. With 20 people dead, over 300 injured, curfews imposed, and flights cancelled, the crisis has left a lasting impact.
India’s travel advisory, along with helpline numbers and flight cancellations, shows the seriousness of the situation. At the same time, the Nepalese government’s decision to restore social media access reveals the power of youth-driven movements in today’s digital age.
The events remind us that governments must balance security concerns with the freedom of expression of their people. For now, both India and Nepal continue to monitor the situation closely, hoping for peace and stability to return.
