The United Arab Emirates, through the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), is hosting an important international workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in weather forecasting and environmental services. The workshop will take place at the NCM headquarters from 9th to 11th September 2025. It is organized under the patronage of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). This event reflects the UAE’s dedication to using advanced technology to improve its meteorological and climate services.
Goals Of The Workshop
The workshop aims to explore the latest developments in applying AI to environmental and climate data. Participants will learn how to use AI to strengthen national capabilities in weather forecasting, climate monitoring, hydrology, and marine services. The event also focuses on improving the accuracy of hazard warnings and data-driven decisions, while discussing opportunities and challenges of integrating AI into operational services.
Focus On Innovation And Capacity Building
Experts at the workshop will discuss innovative ways to collect environmental data, use advanced forecasting systems, and build capacity in countries with less access to technology. Special attention will be given to least developed countries and small island developing states to help them reduce the digital gap in weather and climate services.
International Experts And Participants
Leading experts from the public sector, private companies, universities, and research organizations will attend. Representatives from WMO modeling centres, national meteorological services, technical commissions, research boards, and the Scientific Advisory Panel will also participate. This diverse group will share knowledge, collaborate on solutions, and develop strategies to improve weather prediction and environmental services globally.
Key Topics Of Discussion
The workshop will cover a variety of important topics. These include evaluating current observation and training data, ensuring AI models work together, developing integrated processing and forecasting systems, and setting standards for model evaluation. Participants will also discuss sharing source codes, improving practical applications, and maintaining quality and reliability in forecasts.
Strengthening Operational Services
A major focus of the workshop is ensuring operational services remain sustainable and effective. Experts will explore ways to improve accuracy, reliability, and consistency in weather, climate, and hydrology forecasts. The workshop also aims to enhance capacity-building efforts so that more countries can provide accurate meteorological services using AI tools.
Public, Private, And Academic Roles
Participants will examine the roles of government, private sector, and academic institutions in the hydro-meteorological value chain. They will review innovative methods for collecting non-traditional environmental data to improve AI models. This collaboration is intended to enhance forecasting and environmental monitoring on a global scale.
Strategic Framework For Collaboration
One goal of the workshop is to create a strategic framework for cooperation between governments, companies, and universities. This framework will include recommendations and structured discussions to address challenges and speed up the development of AI tools for weather prediction, climate services, hydrology, and other environmental applications.
Link To WMO Extraordinary Congress
The workshop’s outcomes will feed into discussions at the WMO Extraordinary Congress, scheduled from 20th to 24th October 2025. The Congress focuses on encouraging the industry to collaborate on AI solutions for weather, climate, water, and other environmental services. This workshop provides a platform to launch joint initiatives aimed at improving global meteorological services.
Strengthening UAE’s Regional And Global Role
By hosting this workshop, the UAE strengthens its position as a regional and global leader in using technology for meteorology and environmental services. The event allows experts from around the world to exchange ideas and develop innovative solutions that improve forecasting, climate monitoring, and environmental services at national and international levels.
Supporting UAE’s Vision For Innovation
The workshop aligns with the UAE’s vision to promote innovation and technology investment. It aims to strengthen national expertise, foster collaboration, and deliver advanced meteorological and climate services. These efforts contribute to societal benefits, economic growth, and protection of lives and property from weather-related hazards.
Knowledge Exchange And Capacity Building
Experts will share best practices and exchange knowledge on AI applications in weather prediction and environmental services. This collaboration will help countries improve their forecasting capabilities, reduce the impact of climate and environmental risks, and enhance decision-making for governments and communities.
Enhancing Meteorological Accuracy
A key benefit of the workshop is improving the accuracy and reliability of weather and climate forecasts. Participants will discuss integrating AI with traditional forecasting methods and using advanced technology to support better predictions. This will allow societies to prepare more effectively for extreme weather and climate-related challenges.
Promoting Public-Private Partnerships
The workshop also encourages partnerships between the public sector, private companies, and academia. Such collaborations will help develop AI-based solutions, improve data collection, and provide effective forecasting tools for countries with limited resources. These partnerships are essential to ensuring global access to accurate meteorological services.
Future Goals And Strategic Impact
The workshop is part of a larger strategy to strengthen the UAE’s technological leadership in meteorology. It supports long-term goals of improving environmental services, integrating AI in operational forecasts, and promoting international collaboration. The knowledge and recommendations from this workshop will guide future policies and initiatives in AI-based weather and climate services.
UAE Leading In Environmental AI
The National Centre of Meteorology’s workshop demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to using AI to enhance weather prediction, climate services, and environmental monitoring. By hosting international experts, fostering knowledge exchange, and promoting collaboration, the UAE continues to lead in technological innovation for meteorology and environmental services, benefiting both the region and the global community.
