Google to Invest Up to $40 Billion in Anthropic for AI Advancement

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Google is gearing up to invest as much as $40 billion in Anthropic, bolstering their ongoing partnership in the field of artificial intelligence. The investment starts with an initial $10 billion, with the remaining $30 billion contingent on achieving specific performance benchmarks.

Through this collaboration, Anthropic will utilize Google’s proprietary AI chips and cloud resources to accelerate the development of its cutting-edge technologies.

This announcement follows Amazon's recent expansion of its own partnership with Anthropic, which includes an initial commitment of $5 billion, rising to a potential $20 billion based on performance metrics. Anthropic has pledged to invest over $100 billion in Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the coming decade.

The AI landscape is witnessing heightened competition as major players invest substantially to maintain their edge. Recently, Anthropic reported that its annual revenue has now exceeded $30 billion, overtaking OpenAI for the first time.

Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, made a visit to the White House, engaging in discussions following previous concerns regarding military access to the company’s AI technologies.

Earlier this month, Anthropic launched its new AI model, Mythos, but has chosen to limit access due to cybersecurity concerns. Only 40 major tech firms have been granted access to identify and mitigate potential risks.

Additionally, Anthropic is looking into reports of unauthorized access to the Mythos system, which they suspect could pose risks if exploited by cybercriminals.
