In a strategic move, Israel has dispatched its sophisticated Iron Dome air defense system to the United Arab Emirates following Iranian missile attacks, as reported by Axios with insights from US and Israeli officials.
Along with deploying the system, military personnel have been sent to ensure its operation. The Iron Dome is widely recognized for its efficacy in intercepting short-range rockets, missiles, and drones, serving as a cornerstone of Israel's defense strategy.
This deployment comes amid ongoing Iranian hostilities targeting UAE infrastructure, coinciding with larger geopolitical tensions involving the United States and Israel. While many threats have been neutralized, a few have struck both civilian and military sites, raising alarms within Emirati leadership.
Reports detail that UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reached out directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for urgent assistance. Netanyahu subsequently directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to position an Iron Dome battery along with several defense troops.
Sources confirm that the system has been vital in bolstering UAE’s air defenses, successfully intercepting numerous Iranian missiles. The defense ministry in Abu Dhabi has noted that Iran launched approximately 550 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with over 2,200 drones during these assaults.
This moment marks a historical precedent, as it is the first instance of Israel deploying the Iron Dome system to a foreign nation. Consequently, the UAE stands as the only country besides Israel and the United States to employ this advanced defense system.
This development has significantly cemented the defense relationship between the UAE and Israel, with officials from both nations confirming close collaboration during this crisis. Analysts and former officials emphasize the emerging strategic alliance, noting collaboration in military action, intelligence interchange, and diplomatic efforts.
UAE officials have acknowledged this support as a pivotal moment, highlighting the assistance received from allied nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Australia.
The Iron Dome’s deployment signals a crucial advancement in regional defense cooperation, marking a transformative phase in UAE-Israel relations.
