US Navy Sailor Injured by Monkey in Thailand During Deployment

Post by : Bianca Haleem

An unusual incident saw a US Navy sailor attacked by a monkey while visiting Phuket.

The sailor, part of the USS Chief crew—a minesweeper involved in Middle East operations—was on leave amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where mines are a growing concern due to conflicts that include the US, Iran, and Israel.

Following the attack, the sailor was evacuated to the US naval base in Sasebo for treatment. Officials report that he is in stable condition and that the incident did not impede the ship’s ongoing mission.

According to a US military spokesperson, this event illustrates the unpredictable nature of risks that accompany military deployments in conflict zones.

Thailand is home to many macaques, which are frequently found in public spaces and can exhibit aggressive behavior, including stealing food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have noted that these monkeys can carry the Herpes B virus, posing health threats to humans.

Ongoing Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

At the same time, tensions are escalating in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global trade pathway through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas flows.

President Donald Trump has instructed the Navy to implement stringent measures against any vessels attempting to lay mines in the area. The US military has also stopped several ships attempting to evade restrictions near Iranian ports.

The strait has effectively remained blocked for nearly two months, creating repercussions for global supply chains, with peace talks making little headway so far.
