On Sunday night, hackers interrupted Iran’s state television broadcasts, presenting footage of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, urging security forces not to “confront the public with force.” This incident unfolded during widespread protests and an aggressive government response.
Activists report that over 4,029 individuals have lost their lives since the unrest ignited on December 28, driven by Iran’s financial challenges. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, among the deceased, 3,786 were protesters, while security personnel accounted for 180, with 28 being children and 35 others not involved in the protests. More than 26,000 individuals have been detained, raising fears about potential executions.
The hacked segment featured two clips of Pahlavi and images of security forces allegedly vowing loyalty to the citizens, though these claims lack independent verification. The state broadcaster acknowledged a “temporary interruption from an unidentified source” but refrained from discussing the broadcast's content.
This incident marks one of several disruptions; in 1986, it was reported that the CIA aided Pahlavi’s allies in broadcasting a brief unauthorized signal in Iran. Similarly, in 2022, Iranian channels aired content from the exiled opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq demanding the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
On another note, the relationship between Iran and the U.S. remains strained. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, accompanied by three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, has recently navigated through Singapore into the Strait of Malacca, potentially heading towards the Middle East, which currently lacks a U.S. carrier presence, complicating any military initiatives against Iran.
In diplomatic matters, the World Economic Forum rescinded the invitation extended to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for Davos due to the ongoing violence. Likewise, the Munich Security Conference has also withdrawn invitations to Iranian officials.
While Iranian authorities have not confirmed an official death toll, Supreme Leader Khamenei acknowledged that “several thousand” had perished. A united statement from the president, judiciary chief, and parliament speaker vowed to punish those deemed “terrorists” while pledging leniency for others.
These protests signify the most lethal unrest in Iran for many years, reminiscent of the upheaval during the 1979 revolution.
