Sharjah, 17th September 2025 – The Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH) has kicked off a six-day international workshop dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings and the protection of architectural identity. The workshop, held at the UNESCO Hall in Sharjah, will continue until 21st September and gathers experts from both the institute and international lecturers from Zanzibar.
The workshop aims to build knowledge and skills among professionals working in the field of architectural heritage. It combines lectures, practical sessions, and field visits to give participants hands-on experience. Attendees will learn important restoration techniques and strategies to protect historical buildings while keeping their original architectural features intact.
Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of SIH, highlighted the importance of the workshop. He said, “Organising this workshop is part of our cultural and scientific mission. It aligns with Sharjah’s vision of building bridges of cooperation with our brothers around the world, to exchange expertise and strengthen capabilities in preserving architectural heritage and historical identity.”
Engineer Sultan Al Hammadi, Director of the Projects, Restoration, and Properties Department, spoke about the structure of the programme. He explained, “We have ensured a balance between theoretical foundations, practical training, and field exposure. This gives participants a complete understanding of best practices in preserving historical structures and protecting architectural heritage.”
The six-day workshop emphasizes both the science and art of preservation. Participants are learning how to maintain and restore historic buildings without losing their cultural and architectural significance. They are also gaining insight into innovative methods that can be applied to safeguard heritage buildings in different regions.
Sharjah has long been known for its dedication to cultural preservation. Through initiatives like this workshop, the city continues to strengthen its role as a regional hub for heritage conservation. By sharing knowledge with international experts, SIH is helping to ensure that historic architecture remains protected for future generations, while encouraging global collaboration and learning.
The workshop also provides a platform for professionals to exchange ideas and develop networks with peers and specialists from different countries. This international cooperation reinforces the shared responsibility of protecting architectural heritage and maintaining cultural identity worldwide.
