China has reached a major milestone in reusable rocket development after successfully completing a 200-second ignition test of a reusable rocket engine producing 240 tons of thrust, according to the engine’s developers. The test is being described as a world-leading achievement and a key step toward powering China’s next generation of commercial carrier rockets.
The breakthrough strengthens Beijing’s push to accelerate reusable launch capabilities, with engineers positioning the country as a serious rival to SpaceX in the race for reliable orbital reusability. Developers said the engine’s performance reflects advances in thrust chamber optimization, regenerative cooling systems, and high-end metallurgy—technologies considered critical for repeatable, cost-efficient flights.
With this test, China’s commercial space sector is expected to gain momentum, as reusability economics continue to reshape the competitive landscape of global spaceflight and the future of affordable access to orbit.
