A major fire broke out on the afternoon of February 24, destroying the statue of Our Lady of Fatima that was still under construction in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The monument, valued at around R$15 million, was nearly complete and was set to be inaugurated in March.
Authorities reported that one person suffered minor burns on the hands and received treatment at the scene from firefighters. Early reports suggest the blaze may have been caused by a short circuit in a welding machine, though the exact cause will be determined after a Scientific Police investigation.
The statue was planned to reach 35 meters in height with an 8-meter base and was constructed using flammable materials. Only the head and crown survived, as they had not yet been installed.
The artist overseeing the project said the design will be revised, and no extra costs will be charged despite the destruction.
