Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has committed to a thorough and transparent investigation concerning alleged document forgery tied to the national football team. This action follows FIFA’s suspension of seven naturalised players. Anwar emphasized that there would be no attempt to obscure the truth, but the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) should be granted the opportunity to defend itself thoroughly. He mentioned that the government would not solely rely on FIFA’s conclusions.
The scandal erupted after FIFA discovered that false documents were utilized to issue Malaysian citizenship to seven foreign players, which allowed them to participate in an Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam. The players implicated include Facundo Garces, Gabriel Arrocha, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel. Discrepancies were identified in the documents submitted by FAM compared to official records verified by FIFA.
In the aftermath, FAM suspended its secretary-general and initiated the formation of an independent committee for internal investigation. The association plans to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as well. Anwar remarked that the inquiry should unfold without interference, although it must remain just, adding, “Proceed with the investigation. That has been the directive. Nevertheless, the process must be carried on.”
In September, FIFA imposed a 12-month suspension on the seven players, which triggered a public outcry, with fans and certain lawmakers demanding accountability from FAM officials and government entities responsible for the citizenship paperwork.
Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, stated that her ministry lacks the authority to dismiss FAM officials as government interference could provoke a wider FIFA suspension, impacting all tiers of Malaysian football, from youth to women’s teams. Yet, the ministry has suggested withholding further funding to FAM until the investigation wraps up.
This unfolding scandal has highlighted the processes governing the issuance of nationality to foreign athletes in Malaysia and the regulatory oversight of football administration in the nation. FIFA’s scrutiny unveiled significant inconsistencies in the documents provided by FAM, placing mounting pressure on Malaysia’s government to ensure accountability while respecting the autonomy of its football authority.
