Australia has unveiled a 15-player squad for the opening Ashes Test at Optus Stadium in Perth later this month, with the final playing XI to be confirmed closer to the match. Steve Smith will captain the side while Pat Cummins recovers from a back problem; Travis Head has been appointed vice-captain.
Selectors' chairman George Bailey said the group provides a "good balance" and noted that with 14 members involved in the upcoming Sheffield Shield round, the panel will monitor performances before settling on the starting eleven.
Three cricketers are in line to make their Test debuts: batter Jake Weatherald and quicks Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott. Weatherald is being considered as a possible opener alongside Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja. Bailey highlighted Weatherald's sustained form over the past 18 months and how his technique fits the squad.
All-rounders Cameron Green, returning from recent back surgery, and Beau Webster have been selected. Alex Carey is the designated wicketkeeper with Josh Inglis named as his deputy. The pace unit includes Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, supported by veteran spinner Nathan Lyon.
Bailey also said there remains a chance Cummins could rejoin the team later in the series depending on his recovery. On the question of the first Test XI, Bailey declined to commit, reiterating that the squad has been named but the final side will be decided nearer match day, possibly at the toss.
Sam Konstas, who opened in three Tests in the West Indies in July, was omitted after a run of poor domestic scores, managing a single 50 in seven innings this season.
The Ashes commence with the first Test at Optus Stadium from 21 to 25 November, followed by fixtures in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. England announced a 16-man squad in September, naming Ben Stokes as captain with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley earmarked as opening batsmen.
