South Africa’s cricket captain, Temba Bavuma, has recovered from a calf injury and will lead his team in the two-match Test series against India next month. The upcoming series marks an important part of South Africa’s World Test Championship campaign, with Bavuma’s return bringing both experience and stability to the squad. He missed the recent series against Pakistan after sustaining an injury in England in September.
Bavuma will not play in the white-ball matches in Pakistan this week as he continues his recovery. However, before joining the main Test squad, he will represent the South Africa A team in a first-class match against India A in Bengaluru, allowing him to regain match fitness and form. His comeback is viewed as vital for the team, which is looking to maintain strong performances in subcontinental conditions.
Bavuma’s return led to one key change in the South African squad. Middle-order batter David Bedingham was left out despite being part of the team that drew 1–1 against Pakistan. Bedingham, who has played 15 Tests and scored a hundred and four fifties, was replaced by Zubayr Hamza, who impressed selectors with his recent performances. The rest of the batting lineup remains unchanged, featuring Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, and Kyle Verreynne.
South Africa’s head coach Shukri Conrad explained that Bedingham’s omission was a tactical decision based on conditions expected in India. He stated that players who performed in Pakistan showed strong adaptability to similar pitches and deserved another opportunity. Conrad noted, “It doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for David. For what we’re going to face in India, the players selected are better suited to these conditions.”
Conrad also highlighted that team balance and adaptability to spin-friendly conditions were major factors in the selection process. He emphasized that selections were made with a “horses-for-courses” approach, ensuring that every decision was guided by strategy rather than emotion.
Zubayr Hamza, who scored a century for South Africa A against New Zealand A last month, earned his place due to his strong record against spin. Conrad praised Hamza as “a really good player of spin” and said his selection was a continuation of South Africa’s focus on condition-based planning. Hamza was close to playing in Pakistan and now gets his opportunity to showcase his skills in India’s challenging conditions.
South Africa has opted to retain its three frontline spinners — Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, and Senuran Muthusamy — all of whom performed effectively in Pakistan. Prenelan Subrayen, who played the first Test while Maharaj recovered from a groin injury, was left out.
The pace attack will be led by Kagiso Rabada, supported by Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch, with Lungi Ngidi again missing out due to fitness concerns. The team also includes all-rounders Wiaan Mulder and Dewald Brevis, providing a balanced mix of youth and experience.
The two-Test series against India will begin in Kolkata on November 14, followed by the second Test in Guwahati from November 22. Ahead of the Tests, South Africa will also play three ODIs and five T20Is, making it a full tour across all formats.
The series will test South Africa’s ability to perform on turning tracks and adapt to India’s playing conditions. Bavuma’s leadership and composure will be key as the team looks to improve its standing in the World Test Championship table.
