In a remarkable display at the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna, Belgium stunned the 10-time champions France, securing a berth in the semifinals. On Tuesday, the team clinched a commanding 2-0 lead through two exceptional singles matches. This victory holds particular significance for Belgium, especially after facing defeats in their last four encounters against France, including the 2017 final. This time around, the players exhibited confidence, composure, and an outstanding fighting spirit, bringing them closer to the coveted title.
Zizou Bergs delivered an outstanding performance against Arthur Rinderknech, winning the match with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Throughout the match, Bergs maintained his poise, showcasing a powerful serve and assured returns. He broke Rinderknech early in the first set and held onto his lead comfortably. The second set proved to be much more competitive, but Bergs remained composed during the tiebreak.
The decisive moment came with a formidable forehand down the line that Rinderknech could not intercept. This shot secured victory for Bergs and confirmed Belgium’s place in the semifinals, leading to jubilant celebrations from the Belgian bench—a testament to the significance of this win over a formidable French squad.
Prior to Bergs’ triumph, Raphael Collignon faced a challenging match against Corentin Moutet. Although Collignon dropped the first set 2-6 as Moutet displayed impressive footwork and shots, he didn’t relent. In the subsequent set, Collignon fought back and managed to stay within reach until the last game. Moutet’s two double faults, followed by a critical error at the net, allowed Collignon the break he required to win the set 7-5.
The third set escalated the drama with both players maintaining their serves, setting the stage for a prolonged battle. Ultimately, Collignon broke Moutet’s serve again in the final game, claiming the set 7-5 and providing Belgium with a 1-0 advantage in the tie. Post-match, he remarked, “It was a crazy match.” His comeback was instrumental in establishing momentum for the team.
Despite being the favorites, France struggled to capitalize on key moments. Moutet’s late-game errors and Rinderknech’s challenges against Bergs’ speed and consistency hindered their performance.
Conversely, Belgium maintained its cool in pressure scenarios, a crucial factor that distinguished both matches.
With this crucial win under their belt, Belgium is set to face either Italy or Austria in the semifinal scheduled for Friday. Italy, the top seed, boasts a strong roster, while Austria is recognized for their relentless fighting spirit. Belgium will need to carry the same confidence and teamwork to push forward in their Davis Cup journey.
The final two quarterfinal matches will take place on Thursday, featuring Germany against Argentina and Spain against the Czech Republic. Spain will compete without world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who has withdrawn due to a hamstring injury.
This victory signals Belgium’s rising prominence in the tennis world. Their players displayed tenacity, focus, and unwavering belief. With two commanding singles wins, Belgium’s quest in the Davis Cup is filled with optimism and strong momentum.
