Celtics Overcome Turnovers to Triumph Over Nets 113-99

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Boston Celtics engaged in a challenging matchup on Tuesday, finding themselves in a battle against the struggling Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center. Despite facing issues with turnovers, sluggish defense, and foul difficulties, they managed to overcome these hurdles, clinching a 113-99 victory. This win advances their record to 8-7, marking their first time above the .500 threshold this season.

Struggling with ball control, Boston racked up 20 turnovers, a season-high. Jaylen Brown accounted for eight of these, while Derrick White and Payton Pritchard added to the tally. These errors allowed the Nets to take an early lead, pushing the Celtics to rally towards the end of the game.

The Nets, registering only two victories this season against lesser teams, ranked low in league performance metrics and had the worst defensive rating. Nevertheless, they caught the Celtics off-guard with an aggressive pace.

Boston instantly fell behind, giving up four transition three-pointers in the first quarter. Coach Joe Mazzulla called a timeout with his team trailing 21-11, unable to slow Brooklyn’s approach. The Nets excelled in fast breaks, netting 22 transition points before halftime, significantly surpassing their average.

Payton Pritchard was pivotal in steering the game, culminating the first quarter with vital three-pointers and assists, allowing Boston to tie at 29-29. Pritchard ended the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, including five three-pointers.

Jaylen Brown, despite his turnover issues, delivered a stellar performance with 29 points on 9-for-19 shooting, including a crucial third-quarter stretch where he scored 17 of Boston's 27 points. His contributions were essential in keeping the Celtics competitive.

Even with a solid shooting night—61% from the field and 52% from long range—the Celtics’ turnovers proved costly, yielding 17 points to Brooklyn from 12 first-half mistakes. Historically, the Celtics are diligent with the ball, but they struggled to maintain order in this game.

Foul issues added to their challenges, with Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta each accruing four fouls early in the third, prompting Boston to rely on deeper bench players like Josh Minott and Xavier Tillman.

In the fourth quarter, the Nets temporarily seized the lead with a three-pointer from Michael Porter Jr. Nonetheless, Boston fortified their defense, with Sam Hauser keying a turnaround by stealing the ball and hitting a three to commence an 8-0 streak. Hauser, despite recent struggles, made a noteworthy contribution with eight points, seven rebounds, and effective defense.

Derrick White's consistent play on both sides of the court, including hitting crucial three-pointers and blocking shots, enabled Boston to regain the upper hand for the first time that evening.

Brooklyn faced a lengthy scoring drought of more than seven minutes as the game neared its conclusion. Jaylen Brown capped the victory with a deep three-pointer, solidifying Boston's lead with under three minutes remaining.

The Celtics will encounter the Nets again on Friday in an NBA Cup group stage game at TD Garden, followed by a challenging set of games against playoff-caliber teams.

Post-victory, Boston recognizes the urgent need to curb their turnovers and sharpen their defensive focus. As Derrick White remarked, “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
