Chhetri Calls on AIFF to Expedite ISL Season Restart

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Renowned Indian football star Sunil Chhetri has reached out to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), seeking an urgent restart of the Indian Super League (ISL) season. In a passionate message shared on social media, Chhetri highlighted the players' collective desire to hit the pitch again. The announcement, which drew support from prominent players like Sandesh Jhingan, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and Lallianzuala Chhangte, conveyed their growing worry regarding the ongoing delay of the tournament’s commencement.

In his poignant Instagram update, Chhetri stated, “We want to play, and now.” This sentiment quickly gained traction among Indian athletes, transforming it into a nationwide plea for swift action. The post illustrated the players’ frustration, particularly as the ISL, typically kicking off in September, has been postponed well into November. The players' joint statement echoed, “Our anger, frustration, and distress have now turned into desperation — the desperation to play the game we love, in front of our fans and families.”

The situation escalated following the AIFF's unsuccessful tender process for the league's commercial rights, which failed to attract any bidders. With the deadline of November 7 passing without a single proposal, the future of the nation’s premier football league hangs in the balance. This extended suspension has led to mounting anxiety among players, clubs, and fans, with no clarity on when competitive football in India will resume.

The players have implored AIFF officials to “do whatever it takes” to revive the ISL season. “This is our request to everyone overseeing our sport in the country,” they remarked in their joint statement. “India's football season is more crucial than ever. We stand ready to step onto the field at a moment’s notice.” Chhetri’s heartfelt appeal serves as a symbol of the collective demand for decisive leadership and clarity.

The AIFF’s unsuccessful bidding process has far-reaching implications. With no commercial partner in place, several clubs are halting or reducing their operations. Examples include Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Kerala Blasters, who have stopped their training sessions, while Chennaiyin FC and Inter Kashi have postponed player salary disbursements. This unfortunate state of affairs has left numerous footballers without competitive matches for months, adversely impacting their morale and match readiness.

In reaction to this dilemma, the AIFF is contemplating seeking adjustments to the ISL's governing framework through the Supreme Court of India. Justice L. Nageswara Rao, appointed by the Court to manage AIFF’s matters, is in discussions with federation officials to explore potential solutions. Focused talks are expected to center on reforming the league's financial and administrative management to draw in new investment.

The declaration from the players encapsulates a rare display of solidarity among Indian footballers across various teams and regions. “We stand united in our push to commence the season,” the statement affirmed. Despite the uncertainty, players continue to uphold a professional demeanor, maintaining fitness routines and preparing for action. “All we seek from those overseeing our beloved sport is to match our urgency with genuine intent,” Chhetri concluded his message.

The Indian Super League is the most-watched football competition in the country and plays a pivotal role in player development. It has facilitated international exposure for Indian athletes and increased the sport’s popularity nationwide. A prolonged hiatus could reverse years of progress and dissuade sponsors and fans alike. For the players, the ISL represents not only competition but also their livelihood and pride.

With increasing pressure from players and clubs, the AIFF is compelled to act without delay. There are indications that the federation may propose a temporary framework to revive the ISL while ongoing negotiations with potential commercial partners continue. Officials affirm that all feasible actions are under consideration to safeguard the league’s structure and ensure the return of match play.

Amidst this crisis, a sense of optimism persists among players and fans alike. Many are confident that the AIFF will swiftly identify a resolution, restoring order to India’s football schedule. For Chhetri and his teammates, the message remains clear — they are primed to compete the moment the opportunity arises. Their collective appeal has reignited focus on the issue, underscoring that the spirit of Indian football remains resilient, even during challenging times.
