Organizers of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have responded to concerns regarding the dimensions of the ice rinks, which have sparked debate among hockey officials and North American media.
The Santa Giulia arena is set to host a number of matches between February 6 and 22. Critics have suggested that the rink may not be large enough for NHL standards. However, the organizers assure that the size complies with sporting regulations and is deemed safe.
The rink will be 60 meters by 26 meters, a measurement validated by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the same dimensions utilized in the Beijing 2022 Olympics.
All stakeholders — including the IIHF, Olympic committee, NHL, and NHL Players' Association — have consensus that these size variations will not compromise game safety or quality. NHL stars are returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2014.
The Santa Giulia arena is set to open next month and will conduct seven matches from the Italian league and cup as a trial run from January 9 to 11.
