Curry’s 49 Points Propel Warriors Past Spurs 109-108 in Thrilling Finish

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a memorable NBA Cup matchup, Stephen Curry shone brightly, scoring 49 points and sinking crucial free throws in the closing moments, leading the Golden State Warriors to a dramatic 109-108 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. This thrilling contest unfolded in San Antonio and highlighted Curry's exceptional skills under pressure.

This win completed a two-game sweep for the Warriors against the Spurs, having triumphed in both encounters over the span of three days. Following this game, Golden State has secured three wins in their last four matches, now standing at 1-1 in Group C of the NBA in-season tournament. San Antonio, conversely, also maintains a 1-1 record in the same group.

The Spurs appeared poised for victory as they built a significant 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter, heightening the tension. However, the Warriors composed themselves as Curry teamed up with Gary Payton II and Brandin Podziemski to deliver crucial shots, turning the tide and seizing a 101-100 lead with less than four minutes left.

San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama provided a glimmer of hope by making a challenging tip-in, which reestablished a 108-105 advantage for the Spurs with just over a minute remaining. The atmosphere was electric, with Spurs fans believing they were on the brink of victory. Nevertheless, the resilient Warriors fought back.

Golden State's Jimmy Butler III cut into the lead with a layup. Despite futile attempts from San Antonio including a blocked shot by Wembanyama and a missed opportunity from De’Aaron Fox, Curry was fouled with only 6.4 seconds on the clock. He coolly converted both free throws, edging the Warriors ahead at 109-108.

In the closing moments, De’Aaron Fox had one last chance for the Spurs but his jumper at the buzzer failed to find the net after bouncing twice on the rim, sealing a narrow victory for the Warriors. The thrilling finish had fans on the edge of their seats until the very end.

While Curry stole the spotlight, he had strong support from Jimmy Butler III, who added 21 points. Will Richard and Brandin Podziemski contributed 10 points each, their timely shots crucial in keeping the Warriors competitive until Curry's decisive moments.

For the Spurs, Wembanyama showcased his prowess with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while De’Aaron Fox notched 24 points and 10 assists. Julian Champagnie contributed 14 points, with Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell adding 13 and 11 points respectively. Despite their efforts, the Spurs couldn’t thwart Curry's late-game heroics.

The first half set the tone for a fierce battle. The Spurs held a narrow 20-18 lead after the first quarter, but Golden State's three-point shooting surged in the second, propelling them to a 40-33 lead. San Antonio rallied, closing the half with a strong push, leaving the score at 47-45 in favor of the Warriors.

Throughout the third quarter, the competition remained intense, with Curry delivering an impressive bank shot amidst foul trouble, allowing Golden State to pull ahead 68-66. Neither team was able to take decisive control as the game remained tightly contested.

In the end, it was Curry's scoring ability, confidence, and experience that made all the difference, enabling the Warriors to clinch this exciting NBA Cup encounter. As they departed San Antonio, Golden State carried with them valuable momentum and a resounding message about their competitive spirit this season.
