Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia has taken a temporary leave from the team to address a “deeply personal family matter,” as confirmed by officials. This news was announced Thursday, a day before the World Series kickoff. Vesia will miss at least the initial two games of the championship series while attending to his family commitments.
The Dodgers have issued a statement showing support for Vesia and his family. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family,” the statement indicated, adding that updates will be shared as appropriate. While specifics remain private, USA Today reports suggest that Vesia and his wife, Kayla, are expecting their first child.
At 29, Vesia has been integral to the Dodgers’ bullpen during the postseason, boasting a 3.86 ERA across seven game appearances, proving to be a reliable option for manager Dave Roberts. His absence may impact the team's early pitching strategy in the Fall Classic.
Manager Dave Roberts addressed the adjustments needed in Vesia’s absence. “We’re currently evaluating how to navigate the roster and understand the process and rules,” Roberts stated during a press briefing. He noted that the team must finalize their World Series roster by Friday morning, reiterating that they are taking it “day by day” with no expectations regarding Vesia's return, which will depend on how his situation unfolds.
With the World Series roster deadline looming, the Dodgers may place Vesia on the family medical emergency list, which under league regulations would require him to miss a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven. This raises the possibility of his return by Game 3, scheduled in Los Angeles.
If the necessary roster change is made, Tanner Scott, another left-handed reliever, might take Vesia’s place temporarily. Despite not having pitched in this postseason due to recovery from health issues, Scott has resumed bullpen sessions, feeling “a lot better now.” He finished the regular season with a 4.74 ERA and lost his closer position to Roki Sasaki.
In the 2024 regular season, Vesia achieved a commendable 3.02 ERA with five saves over 68 appearances, demonstrating reliable control and the ability to perform under pressure—qualities crucial in a pivotal series like the World Series.
This period is both emotional and uncertain for Vesia and the Dodgers. As the team pushes for a championship victory, they remain committed to prioritizing Vesia’s personal circumstances. Manager Dave Roberts and his teammates have fully expressed their support for Vesia, acknowledging the significance of family over professional commitments.
The Dodgers maintain optimism about Vesia's potential return before the series concludes, which could provide a significant lift during critical games. Alex Vesia’s current absence illustrates the delicate balance professional athletes navigate between personal duties and their career aspirations. The Dodgers are unwavering in their support for him as he navigates this important family chapter, with fans and teammates hoping for positive news and his return to the mound shortly.
