Duke Overpowers Kansas 78-66 with Late Surge in New York Showdown

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

In a captivating Champions Classic match-up held in New York, the Duke Blue Devils claimed a 78-66 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks on Tuesday night. Duke, currently ranked No. 5, faced a No. 24 Kansas team in a thrilling early-season contest.

The game remained tightly contested until Duke executed a critical 9-0 run that shifted momentum in their favor. Kansas struggled offensively during this stretch, failing to score for over four minutes, allowing Duke to capitalize on the moment and advance their record to 5-0. Conversely, this defeat dropped Kansas to 3-2.

Freshman sensation Cameron Boozer showcased his skills with an impressive 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, marking his third double-double of the season. His contributions on both ends were instrumental for Duke as they weathered the storm during crucial moments.

Isaiah Evans also stepped up for Duke, adding 16 points to the scoreboard, while Patrick Ngongba II made his mark with 13 points. The Blue Devils exhibited excellent teamwork throughout the match, particularly in the final moments when pressure mounted.

Kansas played without one of its key freshmen, Darryn Peterson, due to a hamstring injury, but they managed to stay in the contest and trimmed Duke's advantage to 65-61 with under six minutes remaining.

Tre White led the Jayhawks with a noteworthy 22 points and nine rebounds, nearly achieving a double-double of his own. Melvin Council Jr. added 15 points along with six assists, while Flory Bidunga efficiently contributed 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting.

Despite their resilience, Kansas struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 4 of 21 attempts (19%). Their shooting woes in the dying minutes proved to be their downfall, as they failed to score after Council's three-pointer narrowed the margin to 67-64.

Duke's dominance on the boards proved pivotal, finishing with a 41-30 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive rebounds—crucial moments that led to Evans' important three-pointer late in the game.

Duke's bench performance emerged as another key factor, outscoring Kansas' reserves 18-5, with four Duke players contributing points off the bench compared to just one for the Jayhawks.

Effective rebounding, a robust bench, and superior late-game strategy allowed Duke to secure the win, despite both teams facing challenges with outside shooting.

The first half was tightly contested, characterized by solid defensive plays from both sides. The teams combined for just 5-for-24 from three-point range before halftime, concluding with Duke ahead 41-33 thanks to an 11-3 finish.

Evans' three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer fueled Duke's momentum as they entered the second half.

The free-throw line also proved crucial, with Duke converting 17 of 26 attempts, while Kansas managed 10 of 14, contributing to Duke's control of the game.

This victory marks Duke's third triumph away from home and their second against a top-tier opponent on neutral grounds this season. The Blue Devils appear well-rounded, with younger players like Boozer and Evans stepping up in critical moments.

Despite the defeat, Kansas displayed determination and skill. Once their roster strengthens, particularly with Peterson's return, they are poised for improvement. However, addressing their shooting inconsistencies and rebounding deficiencies will be essential to competing with elite teams.
