Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The 17th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship kicked off on Thursday, marking a significant stage as the country qualifier rounds commenced for professional athletes holding purple, brown, and black belts across all weight classes. These initial matches featured elite fighters from around the globe, contending for a few coveted spots in the main brackets and finals.

The competition for qualification is fierce. Only two athletes per country can advance in each weight class if they share the same belt level, ensuring that only the top performers from every nation progress. The finals for purple and brown belts are set for Friday, followed by the eagerly awaited black belt finals on Saturday.

Mohammed bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, a Board Member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, highlighted that the professional category is always the most thrilling aspect of the championship. He emphasized that it showcases the pinnacle of Jiu-Jitsu skills, techniques, and strategies. According to Al Dhaheri, Thursday's qualifier matches were filled with tactical brilliance, speed, and precision, with black belt competitors needing to maintain unwavering focus due to the high level of rivalry.

He further remarked that the qualifier system underlines the significance and global stature of the championship, providing opportunities for athletes across numerous nations to compete and advance, thus elevating the overall quality of competition. Al Dhaheri stressed that this framework motivates competitors to continually enhance their performance to reach the tournament’s main stages.

The UAE delegation showcased impressive results during the qualifiers, securing a significant number of spots for the next stages. Al Dhaheri noted that these outcomes reflect the effective local training programs and demonstrate that Emirati athletes are ready to perform on an international scale.

One notable Emirati competitor was Faisal Alwahedi from Baniyas Club, who successfully progressed to the main bracket qualifiers in the purple belt 69 kg category. Alwahedi expressed his excitement about this milestone in his athletic journey, stating that achieving it required intense focus and dedication, and he feels energized to compete for the gold. He indicated he will keep analyzing his rivals to maximize his performance.

Another standout was Russian athlete Eduard Dimura from ZR Team International, competing in the professional black belt 94 kg division. He described the championship as a unique event with a vibrant atmosphere, explaining that the audience’s presence fuels the athletes' motivation, bringing together some of the best fighters from various clubs and academies worldwide. Dimura stated he has been thoroughly prepared, both physically and technically, and aims to showcase his abilities until the very end, acknowledging this championship as a breeding ground for champions.

The event will continue on Friday with finals for the purple and brown belts alongside further black belt qualifiers, culminating with the professional black belt finals on Saturday at 6 PM. The championship will officially conclude on Sunday with the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Awards ceremony, recognizing the season’s top talents.

This year’s championship reaffirms why the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship ranks among the most esteemed and global martial arts events, attracting top-tier athletes and demonstrating world-class talent from across all continents.
