In a thrilling encounter on Sunday night in Elmont, N.Y., the New York Islanders edged past the Seattle Kraken with a 1-0 shootout victory, spearheaded by Kyle Palmieri's crucial goal. Notably, it was the first NHL game of the season to end scoreless through both regulation and overtime.
This triumph marked the Islanders’ first shootout victory since defeating the Philadelphia Flyers on November 24, 2014, making it a notable event in the team's history. For the Kraken, this was their first scoreless game since their inception in the 2021-22 season, while the Islanders last faced a 0-0 tie during an overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on October 17, 2024.
Palmieri's successful shootout goal was backed by Bo Horvat, who also found the net in the shootout. Meanwhile, goalie David Rittich played a key role with 19 saves in regulation and overtime, stopping one crucial shot in the shootout. Although Freddy Gaudreau scored first in the shootout, the Kraken faltered with two missed attempts before Rittich blocked Chandler Stephenson's shot, clinching the win.
On the other side, Kraken goalie Joey Daccord put on a solid performance with 34 saves, keeping the team competitive despite the defeat. Seattle ended their four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record, showcasing their competitive spirit.
The Islanders controlled the early stages of the game, outshooting Seattle 20-10 in the first two periods. This was the first instance this season where a game went scoreless after two periods. New York had struggled offensively in their previous match, losing 2-1 to the St. Louis Blues.
Late in the second period, the Islanders had potential scoring opportunities, including a wraparound attempt by Max Shabanov, who faced tough defense from Kraken's Jamie Oleksiak. A setup from Casey Cizikas in the crease was deflected by Adam Larsson, preventing a goal. Rittich's key saves in the third period on Berkly Catton and Matthew Schaefer were matched by Daccord's stops on Mathew Barzal and Schaefer, preserving the scoreless tie before the shootout.
With this win, the Islanders now boast seven victories in their last nine games, thanks to a blend of strong defense, superb goaltending, and composure during the shootout. This game underscored the Islanders’ capacity to thrive in tightly contested, low-scoring matches, illustrating their resilience and teamwork on both ends of the ice.
This victory gives the Islanders a boost as they advance in the season, while the Kraken aim to regroup and enhance their scoring chances in forthcoming games. The high energy displayed by both teams made for an exciting climax in this closely-fought match.
