KL Rahul Takes Charge as Captain for ODI Series Against South Africa

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Indian cricket team has announced a significant adjustment ahead of their three-match ODI series against South Africa. Senior batsman KL Rahul will lead the side as captain for the series, stepping in due to the absence of regular captain Shubman Gill, who is sidelined by a neck injury sustained during the first Test match in Kolkata. Consequently, Rahul's captaincy is designated solely for this series.

A source from the board noted that this change is temporary, emphasizing Rahul's role is limited to the three matches scheduled. Rishabh Pant, often a candidate for leadership, has been omitted from consideration due to having played just one ODI in the past year. The board anticipates that Gill will make a swift recovery for the forthcoming ODI matches against New Zealand in January 2026. The series against South Africa is set to kick off on November 30 in Ranchi, with subsequent games in Raipur on December 3 and Visakhapatnam on December 6.

A key highlight is the return of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been absent from white-ball cricket for nearly eight months. His last ODI appearance was during the Champions Trophy final in March in Dubai. Jadeja's inclusion comes as all-rounder Axar Patel is rested for this series. He also participated in India’s recent Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, bolstering the spin attack.

Some experienced players will be resting throughout this ODI series as part of a strategy to manage workloads. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who recently featured in several high-stakes matches, is being rested after his last ODI in the 2023 World Cup final. Likewise, Mohammed Siraj is resting following intense Test matches in Kolkata and Guwahati. Axar Patel, who participated in India’s earlier white-ball tour to Australia, will not be included in the squad. This management strategy aims to maintain their fitness for upcoming tournaments.

The series presents an opportunity for young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to make an appearance in ODI cricket, having not played in the previous squad against Australia. Jaiswal may open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli, who has retired from Tests and T20Is but remains in ODIs, is also in the lineup, allowing fans to witness the famed Rohit-Kohli duo once again.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been called back to the ODI squad after performing excellently in a recent unofficial ODI series against South Africa A, scoring 117, 68*, and 25 across three matches. With Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer recovering from injuries, Gaikwad has successfully secured his spot. This series could be pivotal for him to showcase his talent in the 50-over format.

With senior players resting, the pace attack will now be led by a younger group of bowlers including Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. The spin options will feature Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, and Jadeja, creating a balanced bowling lineup ready to tackle varying pitch conditions.

The full squad for India's ODI series consists of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (Captain & Wicketkeeper), Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Dhruv Jurel.

This ODI series is crucial for India as they blend experienced players with young talent, optimistic about their performance with Rahul leading and Jadeja's return, despite missing key players like Gill, Bumrah, and Siraj. Fans eagerly anticipate how this revamped squad will fare in South Africa.
