Nick Kyrgios reports sudden knee improvement, eyes wild-card for 2025 Australian Open

Nick Kyrgios reports sudden knee improvement, eyes wild-card for 2025 Australian Open

Post by : Meena Hassan

Australian player Nick Kyrgios has disclosed an unexpected improvement in a long-standing knee issue, raising the prospect of a competitive return and a potential wild-card for the 2025 Australian Open. The 30-year-old has managed just five singles matches across the past three years while recovering from wrist and knee surgeries.

“Over the last month I’ve noticed a real change in my knee,” Kyrgios said. “It hasn’t been swollen and I haven’t felt terrible after sessions.”

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist, who has spent months in rehabilitation, described the development as close to miraculous. “I don’t know whether to call it a miracle or anything, but my knee feels like it’s a couple of years younger,” he added.

Kyrgios also said he has been able to complete several consecutive days of training for the first time in months without setbacks. “I don’t want to jinx it, but something has changed and it’s allowed me to put three, four days of training together, recover and then build on that,” he explained.

Currently ranked 652nd in the world after a prolonged absence, Kyrgios would need a wild-card to enter the Australian Open. He has not played since losing in the second round of the Miami Open in March 2025.

As a sign of growing match readiness, Kyrgios is scheduled to play an exhibition match against women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on December 28 in a special "Battle of the Sexes" event.
