In an exhilarating match on Sunday, the Minnesota Wild overcame the Vegas Golden Knights, winning 3-2 in overtime. Kirill Kaprizov scored the decisive goal with just 10 seconds remaining in overtime. However, a crucial moment occurred two minutes earlier, where Matt Boldy’s defensive excellence proved pivotal in securing Minnesota's victory.
During the overtime period, Marcus Johansson lost possession, giving Vegas a significant scoring chance. Mitch Marner charged toward the Wild net on a breakaway, opting to pass to Shea Theodore who seemed set to score as Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson shifted toward Marner. At the pivotal moment, Boldy intervened, lifting Theodore’s stick and thwarting what looked like an inevitable winning goal for the Golden Knights.
Immediately following this, Boldy created another critical moment by drawing a penalty against Theodore with just 29 seconds left in overtime. This opportunity led to a power play where Boldy assisted on Kaprizov’s game-winning goal, fed by Mats Zuccarello for a fierce one-timer. This marked Kaprizov's 11th career overtime goal, solidifying a thrilling victory for the Wild.
Coach John Hynes commended Boldy’s relentless effort, emphasizing teamwork and the importance of every player's contribution towards success. He highlighted Boldy's stick lift as an emblem of this team spirit.
In contrast, Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy expressed his dissatisfaction post-game, believing Boldy's stick lift warranted a penalty and deeming the subsequent call on Theodore as “poor.” His frustration was evident during the match.
This win signifies a strong turnaround for Minnesota, who previously struggled with an early season record of only three wins from twelve games. Following a players-only meeting on October 31 led by captain Jared Spurgeon, the team has since demonstrated marked improvement, currently standing at 6-1-1 since November 1, having conceded only 14 goals in that span. The last five games saw them allowing just six goals, with none scored against during even-strength play for over 268 minutes.
Kaprizov shared insights on the team's earlier 'soft' gameplay, noting that everyone is now more unified and focused. Marcus Foligno echoed this sentiment, illustrating past defensive laxity, which granted opponents too much freedom. The enhanced defense and structured approach have helped the Wild regain their successful identity.
In the game against Vegas, Joel Eriksson Ek and Yakov Trenin also found the net for Minnesota. Zuccarello was instrumental with two assists while Gustavsson recorded 23 crucial saves. However, the Wild faced concerns as Ryan Hartman suffered a lower-body injury in the third period, posing a potential issue for their upcoming match against Carolina. Additionally, Marco Rossi remains unavailable, leaving the team with limited center options.
Notably, this victory halted a challenging losing streak against Vegas, who had bested the Wild in their last five regular-season encounters and eight out of the last nine overall.
Yakov Trenin's goal, celebrated with exuberance after a powerful hit by Foligno, provided Minnesota a temporary lead before the Golden Knights equalized and forced overtime. Trenin humorously referred to his celebratory jump onto the glass as 'stealing' Foligno's signature move.
Foligno maintained his aggressive play throughout the night, delivering seven impactful hits, including against notable players like Tomas Hertl and Noah Hanifin. He emphasized the team's drive stemming from their playoff defeat to Vegas last season, as they aimed to demonstrate their capabilities.
Coach Hynes praised the Foligno-Yurov-Trenin line for their relentless forechecking and physical presence, noting how their combined efforts allowed Minnesota to control play in the offensive zone and keep Vegas defensive.
Meanwhile, goalie Filip Gustavsson faced scrutiny regarding his competition with Jesper Wallstedt, who has recently recorded two shutouts. Gustavsson acknowledged that their strong performances push both players to elevate their games.
This victory illustrates how far the Wild have progressed as a team, exemplifying solid defense, intensity, discipline, and crucial contributions from both key players and role players, enabling them to secure a hard-fought win. The Wild remain optimistic about continued growth, marking this match as a significant step towards reclaiming their winning style.
