Nagelsmann Focuses on Victory to Ensure World Cup Spot

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The head coach of Germany, Julian Nagelsmann, has stated a clear intention to prioritize victories in his team's final two World Cup qualifiers. His sole aim is to achieve back-to-back wins, which will ensure Germany’s automatic passage to the 2026 World Cup. The national squad is set to face Luxembourg first, followed by a match at home against Slovakia. Winning these games will solidify their lead in Group A.

During a recent press briefing, Nagelsmann emphasized the importance of success, declaring, “Our objective is straightforward: we must secure six points from these matches.” He expressed the need for a balanced squad, with adequate cover in every position. Ultimately, his focus remains clear—win these games to guarantee World Cup qualification, independent of rival teams' performances.

The initial match will take place in Luxembourg on Friday, with the team then hosting Slovakia on November 17. Currently, Germany leads Group A with nine points, narrowly ahead of Slovakia due to goal difference. Northern Ireland trails with six points, while Luxembourg has yet to achieve a victory. Achieving wins in both matches guarantees automatic qualification, while a second-place finish might lead to a playoff in March 2026.

Nagelsmann remarked that the team cannot afford to falter again, recalling their 2-0 defeat to Slovakia earlier in September. Since that loss, Germany has bounced back with three consecutive wins, showcasing their determination to secure a World Cup spot. The coach recognized the squad's progress but reminded them that the work is not over.

A recent decision that raised some eyebrows was Nagelsmann's exclusion of midfielder Angelo Stiller from the lineup. The 24-year-old, who has appeared five times for the national team, was not selected; however, Nagelsmann assured that Stiller's prospects for international play remain bright. “I discussed it with Angelo. His progress is good, but at this time, Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlovic are marginally ahead of him,” noted Nagelsmann. “He must keep striving for improvement. The door is still open for him.”

In addition, Germany had to replace Nadiem Amiri, who sustained an adductor injury, causing his withdrawal from the squad. Young talent Assan Ouedraogo was brought in to replace him, and Nagelsmann was pleased with Ouedraogo’s performances at the youth level and wanted to provide him with senior experience.

Nagelsmann articulated his strategy to maintain balance and consistency within the team, specifying that each position should have two competent players to foster flexibility and mitigate the risk of dependency on any single athlete. “We’re aiming to adequately cover every position to confront any scenario effectively,” he stated. This principle of balance has been fundamental since Nagelsmann assumed leadership of the national team.

Aiming to improve after two consecutive first-round exits in 2018 and 2022, Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, is excited about the upcoming tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Expectations from both the German Football Federation and fans are high for the team to advance far in the competition under Nagelsmann’s guidance.

While the coach expressed faith in his players, he adopted a measured approach. “We have bettered our starting position, but we still need to finalize the objective,” Nagelsmann remarked, recognizing the unpredictable nature of football and the need for full concentration in each match.

If Germany can clinch victories in their last two qualifiers, they can seamlessly transition into World Cup preparation, granting Nagelsmann ample time to refine tactics and team dynamics. His disciplined leadership style, commitment to teamwork, and refusal to take unnecessary chances have significantly contributed to Germany's upward trajectory. Fans are eager to witness the team secure their place and start envisioning lifting the World Cup trophy once again.
