The Oregon Ducks secured their third consecutive victory of the season, triumphing over South Dakota State 83-69 on Wednesday night in Eugene. Jackson Shelstad led the way with 22 points, supported by Takai Simpkins who contributed 20 points, showcasing their potent offensive skills.
With nine of their 15 three-pointers coming from the duo, Oregon maintained a decisive advantage from beyond the arc. Shelstad also recorded eight assists, underlining his dual-threat capability. Nate Bittle shone as well, achieving 14 points and 10 rebounds, marking his second double-double in three outings.
Entering the game with a record of two wins against one loss, South Dakota State fought resiliently but struggled to match the Ducks’ dynamic offense. Joe Sayler and Luke Haertle each scored 14 points, helping the Jackrabbits momentarily close the gap in the second half before Oregon surged ahead again.
South Dakota State managed to erase a double-digit deficit down to a single point midway through the second half. However, back-to-back three-pointers from Shelstad and Simpkins swiftly restored the Ducks' lead, allowing them to close out the game on a high note.
Shelstad bounced back impressively just days after underwhelming in his previous game against Rice, where a hand injury affected his rhythm. On Wednesday, he played confidently, embodying the pivotal role he has taken on for Oregon.
The first half featured an intense back-and-forth, with both teams exchanging leads early on. Oregon gained momentum after Shelstad's three-pointer set a 31-22 score with six minutes remaining before halftime, ultimately finishing the first half with a 40-34 lead.
Simpkins, with 12 points in the first half, was instrumental, while Bittle added 11 along with six rebounds. Solid shooting from Haertle and Sayler kept South Dakota State competitive, but Oregon's accuracy from three-point range provided the crucial advantage.
After Oregon pushed their lead to 56-45 early in the second half, South Dakota State retaliated with a 13-3 run driven by three-pointers from Jaden Jackson, Caleb Delzell, and Haertle. A steal and subsequent layup by Alec Squires brought the Jackrabbits to within one point at 59-58.
South Dakota State made a strong bid for the lead at 64-62, but key plays by Shelstad and Simpkins staved off their challenge. With accolades from their performance, the Ducks extended the lead to 70-63 before sealing the win.
The closing moments saw jumpers from Simpkins and Shelstad that solidified a comfortable victory at 75-64. Oregon's balanced attack, highlighted by Shelstad’s leadership, Simpkins’ sharpshooting, and Bittle’s rebounding prowess, stood out as the key to their success.
With their unbeaten record of 3-0, Oregon aims to sustain their momentum as they prepare for stiffer challenges ahead. South Dakota State fell to 2-2 and will seek redemption in their upcoming matchup.
Oregon's prowess in long-range shooting, combined with solid defense, resulted in a distinct advantage over the Jackrabbits. The Ducks seem well-prepared for a return to national prominence this season.
